On moving to Malta from the UK I brought my trusty Beomaster with me. Having wired it up to ariel, speakers and a stereo CD player everthing works fine apart from there being little or no output from the left hand channel when playing from the CD player connected to the auxillary input - DIN plug. Full out put is restored to the left hand channel on pushing the MONO button. I have checked all cables and connectors and they appear to be fine. Moreover there is evenly distrubuted output to all channels when tuned to a stereo radio transmission. Has anyone any suggestions about what might be wrong and any suggestions as to where I might get repair here in Malta if needed as there is no B&O presence here at the moment?

Rozel, Welcome to Beoworld !

I suggest you exercise the Hi/Lo switch at the rear (left side) a couple of times.
Do it while unpowered or you will get a hefty noise from the speakers.
This switch is often not used for longer periods of time and the contacts oxidate.
It will often result in a fault like this.
Of course there can be other reasons but this would be my first check.

My Beomaster 901 had this problem when I got it. There was very little sound in the left channel when using the tape input but the mono button restored the volume. The radio worked fine on both channels.
After some use this problem has decreased and now it seems to have disappeared completely.
I would suspect some capacitor at the input. Bad electrolytics can be "conditioned" by using them and will then improve. But I suppose they will go bad again.

Thanks for your advice. Having moved the Hi/Lo switch several times as you suggest there has been an improvement but not a correct balance between the output channels. I wonder whether I should repeat the operation after using some switch cleaning lubricant on the switch which probable has never been used for over ten years and has been subjected to a considerable amount of dust – a problem here in Malta - before I explore any other possible cause?

In the context of the above it seem a pity that there is no recognised B&O engineer or service agent here in Malta: the nearest appears to be on Sicily.

Possibly of interest I have used 2 four-ohm speakers couple in parallel per channel since the output of the tuner/amplifier is rated at 4 ohms impedance. For recording old, out of copyright, music CDs I have so far found Roxio Easy Media Creator to achieve best results.

No WD40, 3-in-1 or other rust-loseners, please.

Hello Rozel

The 2 ohm speakers should be connected in series in order to achieve a combined impedance.  Connecting them in parallel will give 1 ohm which could damage the amplifier.  I doubt this is the cause of your problem but you should rewire them to prevent damage to the amplifier.

Thanks for your comment. However I have 8 (eight) ohm impedance speakers in parallel giving a resultant impedance of 4 ohms which accords with the rated output of the product.

After working the hi/lo input switch for the gramophone input stereo separation has improved but one channel is still very weak apart from when using either the FM radio input or after pressing the "mono" button.
