Mr Stupid here,

Just replaced the belts on this deck, all works fine apart from the head positioning system  -  the unit picks up the tape etc then sounds like sound thro cotton wool, gently moving the head rotational to the limit of its travel, then it works fine, the system does not seem to rotate the head far enough in either direction!

Any helpful suggestions out there apart from the obvious, wear boxing gloves and get a pro to sort it!!

Sounds as if the tapehead does not rotate fully to it's correct positions.
Check if something is blocking or binding the rotation and/or if something
has been bent or similar when you replaced the belts.
