Beocord 8002 mystery hole?
On the rear of my Becord, there is a hole to the left of the din input. Does anyone know why it is there? It looks like it could for a button/switch. If it was more recent, I'd say it was the right size for a mini stereo in/output. There does not appear to be anything behind it for adjustment access, etc.. Did B&O think better of whatever was supposed to be there in production, and just leave it blank?
Thanks, Brian

Re: Beocord 8002 mystery hole?
Some Beocords in the 8000-series have a level setting switch next to the DIN socket, allowing a switch between Line/DIN level to match many non-B&O receivers.

Hi,
My Beocord 9000 has the hole too, if that helps!

Re: Beocord 8002 mystery hole?
Yes, of course. The switch hole would also have been square to fit the handle of the sliding switch.
The round hole, I've once seen used for a cable remote control but the cable just passed through this convenient hole and it was definitely homemade. I don't know if the hole once had a dedicated function, maybe an oscillator could be coupled in for recording calibration or so. I have no idea.

Re: Beocord 8002 mystery hole?
I wonder if it has anything to do with the same plastic chassis being used for the Beomaster 6000?

Re: Beocord 8002 mystery hole?
If I remember correctly, the hole is in the metal bracket that also holds the DIN socket. I suppose that makes it a metal hole rather than a plastic hole.

A hole can't be made of plastic or metal, a hole is an opening in a piece of plastic, metal or another material. In a normal environment a hole is mostly made out of air.......

Thanks all, for the insightful responses. Now I know what the hole is for. Amusement.

Re: Beocord 8002 mystery hole?
Sorry Brian
But there's plenty of mysteries like this in all equipment. A feature like that may have been drawn in there during mechanical design, even before the rest of the specs had been fixed, and ruled out before actual manufacturing. Then it'll get dragged along with no purpose, just like an appendix.
Along these lines, it could've also been "room for expansion" for some planned product variant (using the same case parts) that never was.
Or some other reason, unexplained to everybody else except the designers and beancounters of the time... wonder why Beomaster 3000-2 has both DIN & RCA connectors for example, while the more expensive BM4000 and BM4400 only have DINs although the circuit boards are RCA-ready?

Re: Beocord 8002 mystery hole?
Or why the Beomaster 8000 had a traditional galvanometer style signal strength meter when a cool bulb design (4400 or 6000 practice) is better fitting with the space-age design? The Beogram CD50 was prepared for optical out, but were newer used or exploited, and the tape monitoring loop of the Beomaster 8000 is completely useless with B&O decks, and the black/silver key combination of the Beocord 9000 which made it fit neither of the 6000/8000 components. There are a lot of examples

Thanks, Soren and Blackrix. Maybe an idea for a new thread? 'What is it?', or 'Why did they?' Sounds like it could be quite a list.

Re: Beocord 8002 mystery hole?
You are all totally wrong.
At the finish line in Struer there was an end check technician, his name was Jens Dram, he did like to drink, but was not allowed to drink hard liquer during work time (beer was allowed as everywhere in DK), he found out that a small pocket bottle fitted just inside the chassis, to get unseen at the liquer he bored a hole in each unit he was checking, through the hole he put a strawhalm into the bottle and this way he could get through the day without starting shaking, the overseers never found out.
Today Jens is dead and on the graveyard in Struer you can find a stone engraved with "Under these empty bottles rests Jens Dram".

Re: Beocord 8002 mystery hole?
Steffen:
But then years later, the RCA connectors
returned in the 8000 and 6000 series and again in the 5000 and 5500
series. But they disappeared again with the 6500 models...
Obviously some new beancounters once again ordered to cut the costs in
the production. It has happened quite a few times in the history of
B&O
In
all fairness, the 6500 gained two Powerlink sockets and one more input
DIN, so there simply wasn't room for more connectors without a major
mechanical redesign. The connector bay is packed, the only thing that
could go is the mostly useless pre in/out link.
Also, I suppose connectivity with Kikinoko peripherals wasn't a
major point for anyone buying a new Beomaster those days, so RCA's
simply weren't that important any more / yet. There weren't too many
iPods or internet radios around

The pre in/out is very useful when you own an AV7000! On the other hand, it might just be there to fill a hole in the chassis.....
