    Beosystem 1 Surround Sound Options

I have set up a beosytem1 and founf that the only option I get for the surrond mode is "Dobly Pro Logic"

    Question:

    1. Are there any more option available?

    2. How do i activate them

    3. Are the options available depend upon the source type. I am using the Optical Link to connect audio from PS3, Roku and Plasma TV. The only option i have noticed so far playing blu-ray, 5.1 audio is "Dolby Pro Logic"

    4. What impact does the speaker distance, speaker levels have on the surround settings. I am hoping to get more technical reading iinto these settings to make the best of them

    Thanks for any input.

Re: Beosystem 1 Surround Sound Options

Here's the specs for the BeoSystem 1 off B&O website:

    http://www.bang-olufsen.com/product-archive?ProductName=BeoSystem%201

Stereo system:    BTSC (mono, stereo, Second Audio Program - SAP)
Surround sound systems:    Dolby® Digital, Dolby® ProLogic, DTS®
    Sound modes:

       Speaker 1: Mono
       Speaker 2: Stereo
       Speaker 3: Dolby®-3 stereo
       Speaker 4: Stereo-4
       Speaker 5: Surround sound

As for the how do you activate them I believe it is depended on the source material.  When I am watch a basic channel through DirecTV and I look under Sound System it displays Dolby Digital.  When I am watch certain DVD selections I have see it display Dolby ProLogic and if I select the audio as 7.1 under the Blu-ray discs settings if avilable it displays DTS as the sound system current active.

Specifics that I have noticed per the source

Music off a CD / AAC / MP3  -  Dolby Pro Logic is displayed

Dolby Digital 2-Channel / Dolby Digital Multi-Channel  -  Dolby Digital is displayed

MPEG-2  -  both Dolby Digital & Dolby Pro Logic is displayed

    DTS  -  DTS is displayed

As for the speaker placement there are guidlines for optimum placemet, check out these links from Dolby and DTS for starters.

Unfortunately though from my understanding the BeoSystem 1 can only do 5.1 so you can't truly get and enjoy the benefits of true a 7.1 setup, someone correct me if I am wrong on that.

Re: Beosystem 1 Surround Sound Options

You are correct about the 7.1 sound.  BS1 can only do 5.1.  That may not be a big deal, however, depending on your room size and whether you care about the very few blu-ray titles that take advantage of 7.1.

Thanks for the replies - it certainly helps to talk with some one using the same unit

Is it possible to control the beosystem 1 with a becom 6000 phone?

It does not work in my case.

Re: Beosystem 1 Surround Sound Options

I can't say for sure, seeing that I don't own a BeoCom 6000 but from what I have seen in the specs as well as listed on the products page of BeoWorld you should be able to adjust the volume of your Bang & Olufsen audio and video products directly from your handset. First select which sound source, audio or video, you wish to adjust and then its just a matter of turning the wheel.

As well while the phone is ringing, you should be able to adjust the volume of a Bang & Olufsen product without pressing the A.V button first. Simply turn the wheel. The product must, however, be the same one on which you last adjusted the volume with the handset.

If you don't have it get a hold of the User Manual and refer to page 37.

Anyone out there with a BeoCom 6000 that is utilizing this particular functionality...

Re: Beosystem 1 Surround Sound Options

The BS1 is controlled with all of the normal remote commands that all the other modern B&O equipment is (that is, anything controlled by the Beo4, for example).  I could control my BS1 with my Beowatch for example because it used the same codes.
