beolab 3 vs beolab 8000 bassupdate
Hi guys,
I was wondering if you please could help me a little bit regarding my decision of a new pair of speakers.
Because I`m dissapoited regarding the sound of the BV-8-40 (BV 8-40 is miles away regarding sound of the old 8-32) I would like to give the telly a pair of add. speakers (and also connect the "old" Beosound 2300 with the telly/speakers).
I`m not really sure wheather I should go for a pair of Beosound 3 (1 year old) or a pair of Beosound 8000 with bassupdat (one year old). Price is roughly the same. Because I only was able to compare a pair of Beosound 3 with a pair of "old" Beosound 8000 (without bassupdate), I`m not able to judge the Beolab 8000 with bassupdate.
I do not want to add an additional subwoofer in the future (my wife will kill me), so it will be a final solution for the next year. My living room is not very large (only round 20 m2).
I would say in combination with the telly I need the speakers 70%, 30% for hearing music.
Thank you very much for your help.

Re: beolab 3 vs beolab 8000 bassupdate
I haven't heard the BL8000 with bass update either but a word of warning. I had my BL3/BL2 connected to the BV8-32 and when playing music on my BC2 the sound was significant worse then when connecting the BL3/BL2 directly to the BC2.
I reconfigured it so that the BL3/BL2 are now connected directly to the BC2 and the BV8 speaker is on its own for TV and DVD.
In a nutshell, I would advise strongly that you listen to the speakers with exactly the equipment that you plan on using.
BS9000, BS2300, BC2, BL2500, BL3, Bl2, BS1, BV8, BC4, A8

Re: beolab 3 vs beolab 8000 bassupdate
I have BL3s and as much as I love them I have to admit that if I was in your shoes I might consider the BL8000s first. Since you don't have to match other Acoustic lens speakers( which was necessary in my case) the BL3s won't have much of a technological or qualitative advantage over the 8000s. The 8000s will also always be design icons which would be highly questionable for the BL3s. So unless you need a "satellite" type speaker for placement I think a full standing, design icon would be my first choice. It should also match the polished tulip subwoofer a little better when you sneak that purchase into the house;)

We have BL3s and I could not have fitted BL8Ks - and I am happy with the clarity of the BL3s hotknife:

Your room is nicer than ours, but show your wife our picture below:
I think the BL11 would look quite beautiful on the floor either side of your BV8 (similar to the red lamp), or even perhaps on the edge of the cupboard (similar to the pot plant)

I am not sure of our percentages: but I always run in speaker 2 mode (BL3s + BL11) whereas the rest of the family seems to be happy with speaker 3 mode, where the BV8's centre speaker is active. The family mainly uses the BV8 as a TV, I use it for far more than that such as the picture above showing some lovely jazz being accentuated by the BL11
First B&O (1976) was a Beogram 1500 ... latest (2011) change has been to couple the BL11 with the BL6Ks *sounds superb*

Re: beolab 3 vs beolab 8000 bassupdate
Hello,
If you wish to have a beautiful and well performing loudspeaker, I will then suggest you a pair of BL8000 or BL8002.
Otherwise, the BL3 has very good audio performance but lacks in term of design IMHO.
Furthermore, if the rest of your A/V set up has already the AC lens technology, you might prefer the BL3's in order to get an homogeneous audio retranscription.
Regarding the add-on (Ice power amp) included in the BL8002, my dealer told me that the result in term of bass is not very noticeable. The main objectif of integrating an Ice Power amp, finds its reason in a wish to reduce the energy consumption and realize electrical savings.
Cheers,

Re: beolab 3 vs beolab 8000 bassupdate
The beolab 3 is a little wonder, hard to believe so much sound can be heard from such a small speaker. The sound is very transparant, with your eyes closed, it's difficult to tell the exact location of the speaker. Much detail, good bass too. Beolab 8000 sound beautifull/smooth but completely different, an "older" sound, like we're used to. But definitly very good. Just have a listen to both.

Re: beolab 3 vs beolab 8000 bassupdate
Tim,
I`m not able to distinguish between BL8000 with bassupdate and the new BL8002 I`ve bought. But I think, it has to be a difference between latest BL8002 and BL8000 before "bassupdate". Normally the lower frequencies (bass) are good enough with the organ pipes. But for me, it was not enough (my wife always tells me, I do not need a premium music equipment, I only need subwoofers, because it seems I`m deaf), so I ordered the BeoLab 2 subwoofer. I will place it left side next to the sideboard in the corner.
Unfortunatly I`m not able the place a pair of BL9 in my living room (not enough space), I had to start with the BL8002.
I did not order the BL3, because I didn`t like they placed on the original floor stand (to tiny) and they sounded a little overstrained when I listend to them.
But, I have to admit, that it is correct, (yes wife, you are always right), I do not have the sence of hearing.
So, if you are not a "boom boom-subwoofer" teenager of the 70/80th like me, the BL3/BL8002 do have enough bass.
