tone arm problem on BG 4004

I am a brand-spanking new member of this forum and damn glad to find it.  I had the amazing luck to be GIVEN a Beogram 4004 in almost pristine condition from a friend at work.  I've kept the deck in storage for about 5 years while waiting until I had a suitable system on which to play it. Now that I've set it up and purchased a new cartridge from Soundsmith I'm having a problem with the mechanism that raises the tome arm off of the LP.

It seems that the tone arm has some lag when I press "stop".  This causes a nasty problem as the entire chassis quickly moves back to the start position before the stylus has raised off of the LP.  The stylus drags across the LP quite a long way before it raises.

My guess is that this is just a malfunction due to the internal mechanism being old.

Has anyone had experience with this?  Do I need to send it in to a shop or is there a simple repair (god I hope so) that I can do to correct this?

    Many thanks!

    Dave

    Welcome to Beoworld !

The mechanics are probably just in need of lubrication. This is very common.

Do a search across the forum sections and I'm sure you'll find much more info, we've had this issue several times.
