I've been using the NAD for a while with an old TX - I tried a cheaper one the other day and it did sound thin in comparision, so switched back to the NAD. It is quite sensitive to picking up noise from transformers etc but works great once you've got it in the right place.
I guess so much depends on the cartridge and turntable you are using as well. It would be good to have some sort of guide to good pre-amps and which ones people recommend from experience. This would be useful given that all the recent stuff doesn't have a preamp built in and the huge premium that is being charged for B&O turntables with built in pre-amps.
