    beogram 8000 tone arm issues

I have an 8000 that won't behave!  I did the cap replacement (thanks Martin), checked ALL the solder joints (seem ok) and lubed the track.  All functions seem to work perfectly EXCEPT the *%#%& tone arm won't drop all the way. Before I did the cap replacement all the functions were hit or miss, in fact it basically stopped working all together.

I'm sure I've missed something, but I have gone over it so many times I'm about to take a sledge hammer to it.

When the "play" button is pushed the platter rotates and the arms go to the correct position and just stay.  If the "<<" or ">>" is pushed the arms move correctly, then the "play" button is pushed and the arm drops to about 1-2 mm above the record.  The arms will then start moving to the center of the record and then return back to the off postition.   After playing with the thing (or banging on it) the needle will sometimes catch  the record (as the arms move toward the center) and it will start playing as normal. Though the sound is a bit distorted like when the cartridge does not have enough weight on it.

I have changed the counter weight and sliding scale (slightly) to load the cart more.  I would like to re-balance it, but I don't know how.

Any ideas would be appreciated, especially before I begin its flying lessons!

It sounds as though the carriage rail is too high. On the later decks, this can happen though I have not seen this on an 8000 and I no longer have one to play with to test this theory. They are a bit of a pain to take apart and put back together - nothing like as easy as the 4000 - I wonder if maybe the chassis is not sitting properly.

    Hi,

Or you may have a shot IR diode, the one that allows to count turns at the carriage motor. To test it, use a digital camera and see if the (purple to blue) light it should produce is visible on the screen.

Re: beogram 8000 tone arm issues

If the problem is simple mechanical (the arm lacks enough down stroke to properly track the disc), then try playing with 2 discs on.

If it works OK that way, then the question is why is its vertical travel too limited.

I doubt the IR diode or counter is the problem or it wouldn't find the start of the disc.

Alternately you could make an "L" shaped tool of a paperclip; initiate play and when the tonearm drops, pick it up a little; if you hold steady in place, it will remain there, but if you move it in the direction of play, the tonearm base will move over to follow the tonearm and stay 90* to its track.

-OR- it has nearly 0g tracking force and is balanced at the record surface. You can remove the platter and run it with no platter; because it's black there, it will drop the arm. Set arm to 0g. If the arm is balanced, it will lower to approximately where the record would be and hover there; if the arm is deflected inwards, the servo will try to correct for this and the arm will move in til it reaches the reset point and returns/shuts down.

If the arm is out of balance, you need to remove the plastic cover that snaps onto the carriage around the arm's end. In the middle of the counterweight assy is a small recessed screw; loosen that and balance the arm (while it is in the play/lowered mode) by moving the counterweight in or out in tiny increments. This may drive you crazy. A "cheat" would be that if the arm is too light @0g, try moving the tracking weight adjustment out. If a few tenths of a gram balances it, then just add the tracking weight to that until you're ready to finesse things. (ie: if you need .6g to balance, and cartridge requires 1.0g, then set it to 1.6g; it will be fine.) Good luck!
