$25 Beogram RX 2 - Or, the completion of the $100 stereo
A couple weeks ago I noticed an RX 2 without cartridge on sale on Ebay "As Is - For Parts." I own (and adore and use daily) an RX 2 that I am the proud and only owner of since May, 1987. (Yes, I still have the original receipt, Happy 21st Birthday to me, and the work order/receipt from the one and only time it needed service - replace the output cable.)
Figuring sometime or another my RX 2 will die, I've been thinking of getting a spare or three, working or not, just in case. This RX 2 for parts seemed a decent way to spend $25, because, I thought, there was an off chance it was actually working. In the seller's description was basically this: "I don't know what's wrong with it. It seems to want to work, but the platter won't spin."
Could it just be a case of still-engaged shipping screws?
I bid $25 on the turntable, the minimum bid, and nobody else bid, so I won the RX 2. Today the UPS man dropped it off.
Current primary listening: SMMC20EN -> BG4002 -> BM4000 -> Beovox M70

These pages have stories of the destroyed turntable in shipping and many a warning to just not do it.
I opened the box and thought, "Uh-oh, well, at least I'll have a story to tell on Beoworld for my $25."

Taking the paper off didn't calm my fears.

Once I started taking out the styrofoam, I began to think this 'table was packed better than I originally thought. The tonearm was literally in a box, and a very well chosen piece of foam was placed on the spindle.
On a downer note, the dust cover is very scuffed. Can that be buffed?

I opened the dust cover and took off the platter.
As Evan would say, "Drum roll please...."
Yes! The turntable is still locked by two shipping screws and one platter lock! This baby might be fully functional!

The tonearm counterweight and anti-skating were set for a spare MMC4, said spare MMC4 was inserted into the tonearm, and I took the RX 2 out to the garage. I hooked it up to my "I Don't Care If I Blow These Up Test System" consisting of an NAD 7140 receiver and Klipsch kg2 speakers. Back to the bedroom for an LP that's in bad shape that I wouldn't normally play and wouldn't care if it were destroyed....hhhhmmmm....Pink Floyd's The Final Cut seems appropriate......

She seems to work just fine!
So....in the past two weeks I've put together a fully functioning B&O system for $100:
$25 Beomaster 2400
$50 Beovox M70
$25 Beogram RX 2
That spans what, about 10 years of production, but 3 very different mini-eras?

Other than removing the platter & packing seperately this is exactly how a Beogram should be shipped.
Well done that seller
Chris.
PS. I notice the looks of unbridled excitement on your girls faces when opening the box. Is there one of them in tears of dissappointment when they saw what was in there?
The use of metaphors should be avoided like the plague. They're like a red rag to a bull to me.

Quite the opposite actually. The youngest said, "You got new way-dee-oh, dad?"
"It's a turntable, baby."
"You got new tuh-wurn-tab-ooh?"
"Yep. And it's a Bang & Olufsen, baby!"
"You listen to music now?"
"I might have to fix it, but I hope so."
They both love music, but especially the youngest. Her absolute favorite is Physical Graffiti era Led Zeppelin.
My wife was watching Dancing With The Stars Monday night and took videos of them dancing along. Listening to music and dancing is the youngest's favorite thing in the world.
In fact, when I'm trying to do homework, she'll come in and tell me to turn my "way-dee-oh" on so she can dance.
