    S45-2 speakers inop

I've just taken delivery of a pair of S45-2 speakers which look to be in excellent condition.  However, once connected to any sound system that I know fully works, I only get any sound from the top tweeter in each speaker.  The mid-range and bass carry no sound at all.  I removed the front grills and insulation then unfastened each speaker and the crossover so I could look at them clearly.  I can see no loose connections, broken wires or obvious damage.  The actual speakers look to be in perfect condition.

Any suggestions?  Is the just a crossover problem?

I've read about the problem of sticking coils? on the bass driver but I don't understand why there is nothing from the midrange either.

    Many thanks,

    Dave.

    Re: S45-2 speakers inop

    Hello Dave,

To test if there is connection in the woofer/bass-driver, connect a 1,5 Volt battery to the terminals of the speaker.

If it moves the problem is probably the cross-over: Look for over-heated resistors (turned from grey to brown/black colour), melted isolation on the wires touching each other (causing short-cut) or missing connections somewhere in the network.

If it doesn’t move (most likely after your description of the wire/network) the problem is the unit itself, and you should look for another bass driver since they’re practically unrepairable.

The Beovox S45-2 is a very nice speaker – and worth keeping alive (even improving)

    Good luck!

    Thanks Claus,

I knew I'd seen a post on this but didn't find it when I searched.  Thanks for the link.  I'm not electronically gifted so was fumbling in the dark a bit.  The resistors (thin long grey 'things') look as I'd expect new ones to look.  No wires cross or short circuit with no signs of fraying or cable breaks - looks very fresh.  Coils look perfect and well fixed to the board.  In fact, the crossover network and wiring looks like new!.

I'll try the battery test.  What about the midrange speaker though?

I checked with the seller who of course assures me that all 6 speakers were working prior to shipping.  I know they are good speakers as I already have a set.  I may use these failed units as a test/learning exercise as I know I have other speakers that need refoaming, cap replacements etc.

    Thanks for your help.

    Dave.
