    Beovox 5000 Panel Speakers

Does anyone who owns these have any advice about how these sound in comparison to some of the comparable, bigger B&O passives such as Beovox Pentas or MC120.2s etc? Thinking about having a bit of a re-jig at home when my Beolab 5000 amp comes back from servicing, and I've long hankered after a pair of these.

Also intrigued as to placement options, as I saw that in one of Lex Lance's photos he has his leaning against a wall and they look very attractive in this position, though I imagine you lose a little of the bass if they're not bolted to the wall? They would be in a bedroom so huge bass isn't a massive issue, and besides I have a Cona going spare if I want to lose a few fillings ;)

    Thoughts would be appreciated :)

They are best when matched to the amplifier as they are relatively small in volume and the amplifier has a bass lift. They really do need to be wall mounted - they sound pretty poor otherwise. However wall mounted, they really are pretty good. I have given my Beolab 5000s to my dentist as they are simply too big for anywhere I would want them and have kept my Beolab 3000s, which are not as good but are easier to place. In my opinion, the Beovox Pentas and MC120.2s are both better but not as good looking. The Beolab 5000 amplifier might be quite a good match - I have never tried this combination - but it does appear to slightly emphasise the bass and treble compared to later amplifiers. Who is servicing your amplifier?

Thanks for your comments Peter :)

I've been mulling over getting a pair of these for a long time now, but they are rare and I have not had a suitable amp to connect them to. My Beolab 5000 is being serviced by Martin, after I killed one of the channels by plugging a defective DIN speaker plug into it that then shorted it out! It needed servicing before this, but clearly having half an amp was not a sustainable proposition and I'm pleased to be having both the Beolab and the Beomaster serviced as a pair.

Wall mounting sounds like the best option but I'm not sure I could swing having walls channeled out and re-plastered to hide the cable runs! Lex Lance's setup in the 'Flash Your B&O' thread really does look smart.

    John

I have a pair of lab3000's which to my ear are probably almost on a par with penta voxes - havent compared the pentas with the un amped lab 5000's as the mid range driver in the pentas all need refoaming currently(I need about 30 hours in each day)

Ialso have some lab 5000's but the amp in one needs attention so cannot realy compare - however look at Flash your kit thread about page 7  or thereabouts are some pics of my set ups to get an idea of an alternative to channeling walls etc - here in france some very aesthetically pleasing trunking is available ie not with sharp 90' angles , but rounded edged covers

    hope this helps

    Re: Beovox 5000 Panel Speakers

We replaced the 8000's in our bedroom with a pair of 5000's. Very pleased with the sound and my wife commented that they weren't as 'strident' as the 8000's. The 5000's sound more mellow and rounded.

They put out a fair bit of sound for a bedroom but they are big.

Before I got around to mounting them I had them leaning against the wall like Lex Lance. They sounded quite good considering. I would have had no problems leaving them like that except that I wanted them up and out of harms way.

    Thanks Tony :)

To be honest I would be prepared to have the walls channelled out, but as always there's a WAF to take into account! I also am rather taken by Lex Lance's set up, so might try them on the floor first and see how we get on. All of this is dependent on actually finding a pair in the first place. I've seen about two decent pairs in the last year on UK eBay that weren't up for crazy money!

    Fingers crossed :)

    Re: Beovox 5000 Panel Speakers

I once had a setup with beovox 5000 panels (wall mounted) driven by a Rega internal amp and the signal came from my ouverture. It sounded very nice and was also able to play qiute loud. The tweeter dome on the Beovox 5000 panels are in the mittle of the speaker, so you should try to mount them so that the tweeter is in the same height as your years when sitting inthe sofa (or whatever position you prefer to listen to music in...).

    good luck

I actually still have the speakers, I hope one day to match them with my Beocenter 9000 (which is also sitting in the closet)

    Re: Beovox 5000 Panel Speakers

    Hi all,

I just bought my first Bang & Olufsen, a Beocenter 9500 and I am wondering is it capable of handling a pair of Beovox 5000s ?

    Re: Beovox 5000 Panel Speakers

The 9500 is well able to handle a pair of Beovox 5000's.

    Re: Beovox 5000 Panel Speakers

    Hi stt

The BeoCenter 9500 can certainly handle a pair of Beovox 5000. I have a BC 9500 which now is connected to a pair of Beolab 5000 (so I don't use the amp in the BC).
But i have earlier had several different Beovox'es connected to it - from CX 100's, over MC 120.2's, to Pentas.  It's not the most powerful amplifier -but it can play pretty loud anyway. No problems -and a wonderful sound.

By the way -the 5000's is not that rare here in Denmark Smile Right now there's a pair of  'voxes for sale on a market called 'dba.dk' for only 950,-DKKr (around 100£). I would have bought them, if it wasn't for the fact that I already have the Beolabs, as mentioned above (among with many other Beovoxes) -so I don't have the room for it Sad
I don't know if the seller is willing to send them out of the country.
