What are the best B&O items ever?

ok, inspired by Rich's posting in the ebay forum...

What are the best or difinitive B&O items to have?

    Why are they good?

Why would you never sell them?

I'll start the ball rolling with my Beotime clock. This is not the current one you find in stores, but the factory made turntable platter converted in to a clock.

I have mine hanging in the kitchen and smile everytime I check the time Yes - thumbs up

Over to you..... Feel free to add your own, such as the awesome Beolab 5 speakers because they are simply brilliant or try to justify why a Beocenter 2200 is the ducks nuts

I was thinking about the bottle opener, but I'll wait until it can open cans as well. Until then it's just not worth the money.

Trip is right... but missed a point! My BIL used a B&o bottle opener as a screwdriver to extract a BV4 mount from a wall!

    My vote: BG4000

Agree - Beogram 4000. Good deck even without the design - but the design is simply beautiful. Works with B&O and with other equipment. Incredibly well made.

1949 shaver advert in this sequence must explain why the B&O shaver is such a rarity! (This is a great sequence of adverts on the official B&O site.)

The 1200 Beomaster has a timeless simplicity.

On the television front, it's too soon to judge many current models. The Avant was probably the best of the CRTs, but for looks it's difficult to beat either the BV5, or the BV1/BC1 on a tall pole mount (regardless of how safe or stable you might think it to be!)

Pound for pound it has to be the Beomaster 8000. You get a lot of Bang for your bucks.

From this century; Beosound 1, another timeless design, well-made and very musical machine, a pleasure to listen to every time I turn it on.

A8 headphones, same qualities as described above.

controversial response ... but the BS2 ... I will never let it go, it kept me sane on many nights on the road

just my work lifestyle of the time :)

First B&O (1976) was a Beogram 1500 ... latest (2011) change has been to couple the BL11 with the BL6Ks *sounds superb*

I like all of these but the Beomaster 8000 was not a long lived product and lacked the design purity of the BG4000. Materials used proved not as long lasting. The 4400 design was an adaptation of the Beolab 5000/ Beomaster 3000 theme so not original - it should really have had a new design all together - think the 1900 design with the innards of a 4400. Then it would have been something!

We've talked about this before Peter and I know your preference is for the Beolab/Master 5000 series and the 4400 amp over the 8000, but I'm not sure I agree that the Beomaster 8000 lacks design purity. It was in many ways a blue skies product designed on a blank piece of paper as a no-compromise device. Many of the design features on the 8000 would appear (and continue to be present) on later B&O products, such as the smoked glass over big red LEDs, the major controls using rotating wheels connected electronically rather than mechanically, etc. I know I love the 8000 but for me it is the signature B&O product and I doubt we'll see its like again.

I understand John's enthusiam for the Beomaster 8000, both as a piece of design and as, apparently, a product of the 'build the best receiver you can' engineering brief. I also share Peter's liking for the Beomaster 4400.  I solve this conundrum by having both, thanks to Peter's generosity.

But as for the 'best B&O product ever', it has to be the Beogram 4000 for a number of reasons - engineering excellence, design originality, pure physical beauty and with a performance comparable to any of its contemporaries - all wrapped up in one package.   I can think of no other B&O product that offers all four of those characteristics.  Why, oh why did I sell mine in 1978!

Not denigrating the 8000 which was a superb system - quite possibly the best system made by B&O - but the question was the one piece and for me that has to be the Beogram 4000. No compromises in construction or design in my opinion. However I completely accept that others have different views and am very happy they do! Life would be boring if we all agreed every time! I agree. SurpriseHuh?Big Smile

Is it the best B&O or our own personal preferences? I've always have a very soft spot for the Beomaster 3000-2, Beocenter 9500 and the 70's Beolits but couldn't comment on the construction and performance of many systems I've still yet to hear & play with. I think the Beolab 5's are outstanding and made an impression on the audiopihle circuit and I would put those forward as one of the contenders for the Best B&O ever.

.......along with the BS9000, BG4000 etc etc...

The Worst B&O thread was much easier

I don't have just one favorite but several.

Beosystem 6000 '80s in white edition with Beocord 6000, Beogram 6006. Beovox S120 and S80.2

Beomaster 8000 Yes I vote for this one too. I love it and currently have 2 white and palisander versions.

Beogram CDX Simply a wonderfull cd player which lacks Datalink but sounds and looks so great that it does not need it.

Beocord 9000 Does it get better for cassete tapes?

    Beogram 8002

    the best B&O design.....

Which brings up the challenge... from the OP: best, definitive, and now, best design.

Three distinct categories. The BG4000 is at the top of each, IMHO.

The second category: definitive... I think could be expanded to be era specific -the pieces that represented a landmark but were not necessarily the "best" or "best design".

    Starting w/ the "modern" times...

    60's: BL5000

    70's: BG4000 ...honorable to BM1900

    80's: BM8000

    90's: BS9000

    00's: BV5

I was going to give it some philosophical thought but I've been lugging a BeoCenter 9000 around for almost 10 years without using it so I suppose that's my own personal answer.

B&O items that I have made room for, or would make room for ...

Beogram 4000 - just had to have one, and was lucky to find one in excellent condition. Provides me much joy. (Various derivatives of this design in the B&O line, but getting hold of a working original is a day to be marked in the calendar.)

Beolab/Beomaster 5000 - couldn't be without. Wonderful sound, a B&O design statement which had a lot of influence.

It's easy to forget now that we're all into magazine-thin flatscreens, but I really enjoyed the MX4000 I bought when they were launched -- compared to other televisions, there was no competition. http://www.beoworld.org/prod_details.asp?pid=635

BeoLab 8000 - total statement speakers when they were launched.

Beomaster, Beogram, Beocord 1200 - in white. Mmmmmm.

BeoLab 4000 - wonderful bookshelf speakers for versatile use, and with a distinct elegance.

BeoLab 5 & BeoLab 3 - what a way to do surround! And the wonderful music! And the brilliant looks.

BeoVision 8, on the sculptural stand - in black. Will be a collector's item - particularly the smaller 26" and 32" versions.

BeoLab 2000 - not necessary to add why.

BeoVision 10 combined with Beolab 4500 or Beolab 5000 speakers. The moment I saw the BV10, I started looking for a good pair of 5000s, and I see I'm not alone: http://forum.beoworld.org/cfs-file.ashx/__key/CommunityServer.Components.UserFiles/00.00.00.25.04/IMG_5F00_9315r.jpg

In design and styling terms - BeoSound 9000

In technology terms - Beolab 5

In pure "heart ruling head I love mine and will never sell it " terms - Beosystem 5000!

Re: What are the best B&O items ever?

To give the Beolab 9000 a run for the "best design ever", I have to mention the Beolit 400-600 range.  It's exceptionally good design.

But  since we're in a digital age, my vote goes to the BL5s. Maybe not as iconic as the BS9000 (yet), but it too is an exceptional good design and with functionality and raw power to match.

Your bottle opener must be updated to newest SW to be able to open cans. Originally the bottle opener was meant as a screw driver, but one of the guys, who installed a BV4 mount, used it to open a bottle of Tuborg (or was it Carlsberg?) and IT WORKED! There is also a MKII version, that has NO standby button. You must know that this product gave the company its name: B O - Bottle Opener.

BC9500 with BL5000 and BL7000 were my first Beos twenty years ago, and I still have them and still love them.....
