    Beolab 5000 system

    Hi,

I thought I would start a new post as the last one was pretty much on another subject.

Again here are some pictures of my restoration work of the 2500 cubes and Beovox 5000 type 6223.

Today I received Beomaster 5000 (tuner) which I must say is in fantastic condition. I don't know if it actually works as I don't have anything to hook it up to (yet). Does anyone know how to hook up the cable TV line to the antenna input; I've never saw this kind of connection?

I also though that the tuning slider would be a bit more smooth (the wheel slides a lot and it requires quite some pressure to make it move) is this due to age and can something be done?

Now I will probably have a long wait before I can find the Beolab 5000 and perhaps a suitable turntable. Maybe I'll go for a Thorens as they are quite easy to come by (even the old ones)

P.s. Beosystem 7000 is still going fine.

    Cheers

    Andrew

    How nice!

How did you paint the cubes? i have a recently acquired pair and although in good condition, they may take a good dose of tender loving care.

    Re: Beolab 5000 system

Lot's of masking tape over the chrome and the B & O labels, and then four coats of black semi gloss spay paint.

To do a proper job, you need to remove the grills and paint them seperatly, but there is the risk of damagimg the wood when you do this.

Mine were damaged anyway, so I made the repair with plastic wood and lot's of sanding.

Installing the grills is a bit of a pain as they needed to be glued in.

    Good luck

    Thanks Andrew,

I shall post some pictures of the restoring works. Did you remove the tweeters? This is the part I'm more concerned about as they seem so fragile.

Good work Andrew and welcome to the 5000 Club ;-)

Did you change the capacitors also? Here is the tread of my first restoring work: http://forum.beoworld.org/forums/t/32946.aspx

BTW. I've send my Beolab 5000 to Frede Kristensen (Classic Audio) for restoring... He's the expert for this outstanding amp.

    Best regards

P.S. Where are you located in Switzerland?

I'd love to have mine in the same condition, but I'm too scared to touch them...

Agree! They look really stylish with a high WAF... ;-) The cubes are worth for restoring and they improve the soundstage from some beovox 2400, 3000, 4000 and 5000!

    Re: Beolab 5000 system

    They are Mk I.

I found them at the local "Broki" (second hand, flea market) paid 50 Sfr.

The teak was in pretty bad shape, but that was easier to repair than the cubes (their were no dent's or pieces of teak missing). Lot's of sanding and steel wool and then teak Oil.

I have them hooked up to a Beosystem 7000 and at low volumes they are a bit week, but that could probably be fixed by changing the capacitors.

Most of the time I have the volume up a bit so for me the sound is quite good. (even better when the volume is up)

Nice, i've heard that the MK I Version is the best soundwise...

    That's a really good price. You're lucky!

Changing the capacitors will definitive improve the sound... Remember, the capacitors are 40+ years!!! Maybe Martin (Dillen) can support you.

It was not really a difficult job by my Beovox 2400 and it was my first soldering work... I think the Beovox 5000 has a more complex cross-over network. Some people here recommend good quality caps from Jantzen http://www.jantzen-audio.com/html/caps.html

    Good Luck!

If I could find a beogram 1202 at a reasonable price and good condition, I'll be all set.

The mark 3 5000s probably sound the best, the mark 1s are the best made and the mark 2s are the weakest. With 2500s,I would use mark 1s.

    Hi Andrew,

Congratulations to your Beolab 5000. Your system is almost complete! ;-)

In my opinion is the Beogram 400x the better choice (design and soundwise) for your Beolab 5000 system...

If you are looking for originality then would be the Beogram 1000, the Thorens Beogram 3000 (perfect match) or the Beogram 1700 your choice.

    Best regards

    Re: Beolab 5000 system

Well I finally found a Turntable to go with my system. I managed to win on ebay a Beogram 3000 for only £59.00.

    No it's not the thorens.

I guess it should be called MKII?

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130431142190&ssPageName=ADME:B:EOIBSA:GB:1123#ht_522wt_1139

Seems that it needs a new needle and from what I gather, this might cost more than the Beogram. I guess that I'll have to look around some more.

The 3000 is a good deck - the best deck with an SP cartridge made by B&O. You might be able to get the cartridge repaired by Axel.

    Re: Beolab 5000 system

Hi everyone, today I decided to take a stab at trying to fix the tuner.

Moving the slider was quite difficult. Frede gave me some good advice to make sure that I removed the string before taking off the front cover. (I would regret this later). After removing what seemed to be about 100 screws of various sizes and having bits fall out from who knows where, I had everything open. It reminded me of when I took apart my first clock, the whole thing exploded and I still did not know how it worked.

Anyways, unfortunately everything inside looked like the day it was made, so after a bit of tinkering, out came the WD-40 and a cotton Swab and I started dabiing at all of the moving parts. Low and behold after a few minutes and a very black swab, everything freed up and now the slider moves like it was new.

Now it was time to put everything back togethor and as you can guess, re-attaching the string was anything but staright forward. I actually did not manage to get it back the way it was, but it should hold. (This part took me about 45 min.)

I still don't know how to attach an antenna as the connection for it is foreign to me. Does anyone know if there is an adapter for the cable Tv connection?

    Re: Beolab 5000 system

Please look at this link http://beolab.dk/BM5000-I-uk.htm

So depending of you cable conecction you must use 75 ohm or 300ohm input. I am here using the 75ohm input. The local input is for use if your antenna signal is very powerfull - it actually are there because of the Danish broadcasting 'Danmarks Radio' who used the Beomaster for quality monitor for many years.

The hard job could be to get the plug.

    Re: Beolab 5000 system

Hi Frede, you are right the plug is the problem.

Any idea where I can get a picture of it so that I know what I am looking for?

If I can't get the plug, is it possible to simply push in the bare wires?

    Cheers
