    Welcome to Beoworld !

It displays a question mark because it cannot read the CD.
Probable causes are aging capacitors, cracked solder joints and those dreadful rivet vias.
    Worth having repaired.

hi Martin thanks for your answer;it show 2 and not a question mark.i don't know if it's same as result.

i hv bought this machine for 40 euro cause i hv read great things about it and it has a lovely design.i willsearch for a B&O service  here in Milan just to hv an idea about cost.

    many thanks again.

I am sure Martin is correct - I agree that it looks like a 2 but it is supposed to be a ? - it just doesn't look like it!! It can be the solder or it can be the motor needs a little attention. These are superb CD players and the faults are well known to repairers because there are relatively few and always the same ones! These machines were actually made by Philips in Holland and are none the worse for that. Philips were making the best CD players of the time and the chassis that the CDX uses was also the basis for many very top line players by the independent British companies. The DAC is a 14 bit one but the sound is just wonderful. Probably my favourite CD player.

Same advice really - the commonest fault in these splendid machines is dry solder joints and a fault where the circuit boards are joined by a rivet. Needs someone with a soldering iron and a meter to have a little look. B&O repair departments used to have a memo about this. The laser itself is bullet proof!

The rivet vias connect copper traces from one side of a board to the other.
They are filled with solder so looks just like a huge solder blob until
    you clear it out.
The solder, rivet and board traces work differently with temperature so the
connection eventually cracks and becomes intermittent or completely open.
You can heat up the solder again but the solder will inevitably end up with
trapped air bubbles inside the rivet and it will crack very soon again - if a connection
    can be established at all.
The best way to cure this is to clear out the old solder, feed a piece
of copper wire through the now hollow rivet and solder it to a suitable
place close to the rivet on both sides of the board.
There are twenty or so of these rivets in a CDX and they are found on the servo
and decoder boards (two large separate boards that are mounted one on top of the other).
Most - if not all - are ground connections, going to different circuits.

A time-consuming job but something you will have to do only once (per machine, that is).
Replace the capacitors while you have the boards out. They will also be - if not bad,
then at least marginal by now.
    A cap kit exists.

Mine is still playing great since it was fixed for both left hinge and typical electronics which Dillen did have a look at.

Only trouble these days is the display. The second number is shown wrong.

It sounds awesome with either of my Beomasters be it 6000 or 8000.

CDX is built really well. You don't see many CD players with a heavy cast internal chassis! (not just the CDM 1!)

Most unfortunately this deck runs very warm and so the caps are all nicely cooked by now especially in the Power Supply section.

    Best to change them all.
