No one I know, owns B&O

I was just thinking tonight how great this site is....one main site for questions and information about all that is B&O.  I also paused to think about the fact that there is absolutely no close contact in my city that owns B&O!  Of course there may be someone out there close by but none of my personal acquaintances do!  The nearest B&O dealer is several hundred miles away.   I was wondering if there is anyone on this site in a similar situation?  Do people think you are kind of crazy for your obsession with this obscure (to them) brand?

Re: No one I know, owns B&O

I almost never talk about B&O with my friends and family. My friends says "it's just overpriced rebagded Philips" and my family think I'm crazy spending "that much money on just TV and HiFi". They don't judge my brother for spending over 30k euros on a brand new standard car or my brother in law with sailing boat with all that costs. That's why I hang around with you guys instead. Here we can discuss B&O in a more qualitive way.

It's not common either for me but since I live in Denmark B&O is everywhere. I can go to thrift stores and find it. The latest being a Beomaster 1700 '80s with mint Beovox s45-2 on stands in palisander for not much.

Dealers are in all the bigger towns and Dillen is 4 hours away.

There is no backslash for being into B&O in my family. Both set of grandparents and other family members had it back in the '70s so its okay.

Re: No one I know, owns B&O

Pretty much in the same situation myself. None of my friends own B&O, and they too think I am mad. When I brought my BV3-32. someone at work could not understand why my stand cost the same price as his TV and surround sound setup. He just could not undertand the difference.  My Parents own a Beocenter 4000, but that is only because I gave it them as my Father had alway coveted my B&O.

Our nearest dealer is three hours away and our preferred dealer is five hours away. I do not know anyone else who owns any B and O. However, I can still take great pleasure in all the non B and O people who see it in our house and our amazed at the picture and sound quality. One of my best friends is constantly upgrading his speakers, changing amps, has a dedicated theater room at his house with theater seating on multiple levels, etc. He viewed our new BV 7-55 recently and after watching it for awhile, and making constant comments about the picture such as "amazing," he said he believed we have the best TV in the world. The lack of any fellow B and O owners locally being known to me is more than made up for by the amazement that non B and O owners have when they see and hear the products.

The B&O brand is pretty well known here in Holland. Apart from the Beoworlders I met in person there are only few I know who actually own B&O equipment:

    • One of my former colleagues had a Beocenter 9000 and an MX at home;
    • My parents have a Beosystem 5500 and used to have a LX 2500 too. They bought it soon after I got my first B&O, a Beocenter 9300;
    • One of my friends has a Beocom 4.

Beoworld's twenty-eighth ninth prize winner and fifty-first second prize winner. Best £30 I've ever spent!

    1. schoolfriend's dad
    2. work colleague (whose redlines I babysat while he was overseas)
    3. another work colleague
    4. another work colleague's father-in-law (they gave me the estate beogram)
    5. a friend's aunt (that estate gave me a complete 70s' system)
    6. and all you guys
    I guess I am blessed :)

First B&O (1976) was a Beogram 1500 ... latest (2011) change has been to couple the BL11 with the BL6Ks *sounds superb*

    hi,

this is an interesting thread. i live in b'bay (india). the story pretty much the same is however much in amplitude. brand saliency itself was absent among my peer groups, though not any longer and the source of recall now in all probability 99%C.I would be attibutable to me.

people think that i am eccenteric and apparently have other sources of income (given my job-profile of being a researcher in nielsen). i just reply back to them -- i buy the product not the price!

that said i would be worried if one of my peers actually end up owning one as the exclusivity would be diluted.

    cheers

Funnily enough, no other medical students I know own B&O. Of my peers from school and university first time around, no one owns B&O either, though they all have nice cars etc. I don't think us Brits understand quality design as well as our European neighbours - which is a shame :(

Re: No one I know, owns B&O

I only have some really good friends (also members of Beoworld) that think I'm absolutely normal!! Everybody else thinks that I'm totally obsessed by B&O. And I'm wondering. Why? Because I'm just looking around to have a full link also to the hotel that I'll be on holidays? Please be honest. Most probably I will carry with me an MX4002 and an Overture or some sound source!!!!!!!!

    Best regards

I know of people who have B&O but no one I know personally which is a shame because it would be nice to know someone. My family think I am a bit nuts but thats ok, don't mind Big Smile

What I think we don't realise is there are lots of people out there who have never heard of B&O!! They usually are very impressed though once they see one of their products!

A few of my friends (the arty ones working in fashion etc.) have bought theirs after seeing mine and appreciating the design, sound and picture - my 72yo neighbour has an Avant and the other neighbour has an LX4500, MX3500 VCR and Beocenter 7002 with Beovox S45's. Another friend has a BM5500 with Pentas plugged into an iPod and an MX6000 - all bought from Lee and another an MX7000, BC3000 and BL4000 - they've all bought B&O Phones too!. It's actually quite nice as we can talk about how great B&O is and know how to use each others TV and Audio! I've bought my 7 year old nephew a BC7700 for when he gets older - right now he's into Vinyl on the Hacker record player I had as a kid. It is odd though how everyone has gone for the older B&O rather than newer but then it is much cheaper and better than buying something different new for the same price.

I do get comments though from others (techies) who see it as overpriced and cannot understand why i would buy a second hand RF Avant and DVD1 instead of a High Def TV with Blue ray for the same price - but then they have 5 or 6 remote controlls on their table and no beolink.

    Beovision Avant 32 RF, DVD1, Beovision 1, MX4002, Beound 3000, Beolab Penta MKII, Beovox Penta, Beolit 707, Beolink Passive, Beovox C30, Beocom 4, Beogram TX, 4 x Beo4, Form 1 & 2, Beocenter 7700, Beovox S65,

Re: No one I know, owns B&O

Here in Bath (UK) there's quite a lot of B&O kit in various houses. My landlords a have quite a bit of B&O kit, although with recent sw issues that they've experienced, they've vowed not to buy any new kit :(

Problem is, everyone I know down here who owns B&O is technically naive, 45+ and has more money than sense. ie. they are the kind of people who can't be bothered to do any homework, walk in to the local store and spend £10,000 on a TV and this won't concern them at all!

Re: No one I know, owns B&O

Well, in my close entourage no one owns a B&O product. Altough they all find many B&O products to be beautiful and well designed, they cannot conceive the fact of spending that much of money when one can have a decent flat screen for a fraction of the B&O price. At that point, I prefer not to discuss this subject any longer and just change the conversation Wink

Meantime, they may not understand the importance for us to have a product that generates visual and tactile emotions Cool but that's OK for me then. I live my own life and let them appreciate their products.

    Cheers,

    Guy

Yes, but the UK also has one of Europe's largest populations. Proportionally, I am sure that compared with countries such as Sweden or Denmark, the UK has far less B&O per head of population and that is not just down to B&O being a 'Scandanavian' brand. Lots and lots and lots of British people haven't got the faintest idea about design, and appreciation of this is a facet of our national personality where we lag far behind our European neighbours I'm afraid.

The only other person I know who has B&O is my girlfriend. I sold her the system back in 2006 when I was her B&O salesperson. That's how I met her. Smile

She, even as a B&O owner, still thinks I'm crazy for spending all of the money I do on other B&O equipment.

However, I have two friends that do did have B&o... "Did" because when they found out that I was a fan... they both independently gave me their Beo!

I have occasionally stumbled upon local people w/ gear for sale... I used to always buy it on the spot! Not so much anymore... can't save them all!
