    Re: New Beo 4 coming!!

    Keith,

Thank yo so much for answering that question for me - overall, that's good news.  I'm anticipating getting a BV-7, and the idea of getting a Beo 5 programmed for my AV system is daunting.

Now I just wish there were a way to have the "TV" button turn on the cable box in addition to the TV, but I guess the "macros" will be solely relegated to the Beo 5.

    Thank you again,

    Mark

From a purely technical viewpoint you have much greater flexability using the Beo5, but I do understand that the Beo5 is like "Marmite" you either love it or hate it.

On the Beo5 you can have a TV button not only to switch on the TV, but also to control your cable box either controlling it by the PUC or directly from the Beo5.

DEFINITION of "Marmite" for non UK members is a yeast based brown spread which bi-product of making beer and  is very salty. It is/was given to most children on toast or bread. Its a product which you really love or will never eat it.

I am still reviewing in the new Type 1710 Beo4 in detail because a lot of facilities implemented are not that clear. For example codes for controlling home automation via the Masterlink Gateway have been implemented, but there is no apparent information provided about them.

    Regards Keith....

The main taste of marmite is not salt but "umami".

Although we are used to think there is only 4 basic tastes (Salt, Sweet, Acidic, Bitter), our tastebuds can also taste a fifth one. There is no name for it in english so they use its japanese name: "umami". This is also he taste of the flavor enhancer MSG.

I have just got the latest config software for setting up Beo5, and I must say that they have improved that SW. I have a somewhat complex AV system, and got the job done setting it up in two hours. Now my Beo5 works better than it has ever done.

An interesting alternative for older TVs without possibility to assign "TV" to other sources
is the Beo 4 "for the Digital Age" - recently made in small quantities to check market response!

    "Beo4-DTV", B&O Item 8053529, (That's NOT the NEW BEO 4 Type 1710) offering:

    "DTV" "V.Aux" "V.Mem" instead of
"TV" "DTV" "V.Mem" as buttons of the left column.

Everything is the same as on a "normal" Beo 4 type 162x, exept "V.Aux" converted to a "real"
button and "TV" changed to a softkey.

Please note: not yet clear if the diverging parts (mainboard, rubber) for this model will
be available in future as a sparepart or you'll have to buy a new one again.
But, at least display and metal casing are looking like beeing standard types.

TWG, they did at one point that's what differentiated the Beo4 from the Beo4 Cinema edition, other then it having a button labeled Cinema!   I recall the Cinema edition having some/if not all illuminated keys, not sure about the backlight display though, but I believe it did.   From my understanding they are/were a rarity though!

    Lots of info!

It's not totally clear - can you have a 1710 in the main room with a TV that supports Navigation Button (e.g. BV7 with Software 8.12a)

where can you see this in the menu? I have BV9 with 8.12a

    Anders

Did you get any answer / solution to the issue of the missing Menu option. I also have a BV9 newly updated s/w 8.12a but no Beo4 option.

    Indeed!

Since the arrival of the 7-55 the BV 9-50 is certainly not a top priority
product on their to-do list anymore ...

The 7-55 is compatible, the list is not complete...... My 7-55 was deliverd last week and it has the ability to chose the Beo 4 with or without navigation button. So I can confirm the compatibility.

By the way, the 7-55 is awesome, I really enjoy the Worldchampionship soccer, so much dept and a razorsharp image in HD! No motion blurr at the ball (at least I can't notice it!) Now let's hope "we" will defeat Brasil next Friday!!!!

Curious - the 7-55 is not on the list ...

My  7-55 has the "Beo4 option setting" in it's menue
and I operate it with my Beo4 1710
(set to Mode 1 = Navigation button enabled))

    Re: New Beo 4 coming!!

Do you remember when the Beo5 was launched and a simpler remote was in the pipeline, and the Beo4 was set to die by the end of that year? Now they have launched a new version of the Beo4... The old BeoLink 5000 design must be good (not saying that the simpler remote was killed, it could surface within the next few months with the launch of new music system).

The Beo4 1710 is perhaps the most confusing B&O product I have every owned. The Beo5 takes some effort, but after living with the new Beo4 I have re-programmed my two Beo5´s. Why? It is easy to answer - let me start with the positive remarks: operating the built-in DVD player in the BV7 with the Beo4 1710 or the Beo5 is straight forward and logical, which is very good news - and I use the LIST button a lot, so moving it to a more thumb-friendly-location is also good news.

So what is the downside? Operating my STB is very frustrating. You still have to use the same "GO" + "#", but now the GO-button isn´t the center button - but the play button next to stby button. This is not a thumb-friendly-location, so to have the best of both worlds there is only one solution: Beo5.

Or am I missing something with respect to PUC/STB-C operation? And as Keith said: you can set the IR power to different levels, someone within B&O told me that (at max transmission power) the new Beo4 is 10x more powerful than the previous Beo4.

Completely agree. If you think you buy a Beo4 1710, enable "navigation button" in your BV7s remote menu, and now you can control all navigation- and enter functions with the the new (joystick)- center button, you are ..... wrong!

I can control the BV7s DVD player and the new DVB/S HD modul this way, but when I switch to my external stb or my BD player I have to use the PLAY buton instead of center button and up/down - L/R buttons instead of the stick....(?!) When I try to navigate in the DVB HD channel list in a BC6-26 linkroom using an "old" Beo4 it just doesn`t work. It refuses to scroll using the up/down buttons! I played around with the differnet modes - navigation/no navigation - and MODE 1 - 2 - 3 on the new Beo4, but no luck. Finally I disabled "navigation button" in the BV7 menu (I can now control the DVB HD modul and the DVD player from linkrooms with old Beo4s) and set Beo to MODE 1 (I can now use the navigation button in the main room for the DVB HD modul and the DVD player)

    Roger:

     - and I use the LIST button a lot, so moving it to a more thumb-friendly-location is also good news.

Also agree. Let me add you can scroll forward and backwards through the LIST with the navigation button which makes it more comfortable, especially if you have a lot of buttons in your list. Another improvement are the new LIGHT- and CONTROL functions like LIGHT MORNING; LIGHT TV VIEW, LIGHT SLEEP....I set some nice macros to my Lintronic box using these buttons.

    Roger:

Or am I missing something with respect to PUC/STB-C operation?

    I`m afraid not.

You would hope that the PUCs will be updated to become Beo4 1710 friendly.  Suppose we have to wait and see.
