    AV 9000 issue- monitor problem

    Hi all,

I am relatively new to B&O and very impressed by the quality of manufacture of this company's products. So, to my surprise as I was watching this AV9000 it stopped.

The roller shutters/ curtains have remained open, the screen went blank and the dome light at the top right of the screen went out. I have tried disconnecting the unit from a power supply for a day then reconnecting it with no effect.

The control unit seems to be functioning ok, it comes up with the commucation error- error-1, and is still receiving power from the monitor unit. All connections are ok.

Does anybody have an experience of this type of fault taking place with their AV9000? If so, was the repair costly? Any other advice would also be helpful.

    Regards, Lee

I would suspect that there is a component failure rather than a software problem here. I have an AV9000 as well and although it is really a very smart MX6000 in many ways, I think it would be well worth fixing - you may well find it is a very cheap component - and LX of mine did much the same and it was a 20p capacitor in the power supply. Cost more than 20p to fix mind you!

I would suggest that this needs to go to a service department - the voltages in the back of TVs can be lethal so not one for DIY really.

Agree with Peter, although you will probably find your local B and O dealer uninterested.

Re: AV 9000 issue- monitor problem

First of all let's date this AV9000 as there were 3 types basically. The difference being software and standard remotes.

Take of the center cover and look for label that has a year on it. Also look at the label at the back saying the type and maybe IMP.

Year range is 1992 to 1998 and sadly the Beovision LX range last longer than the MX based AV9000 and the MX range? Not better in my experience.

The problem is the basic powersupply and other dry soldering etc. that comes with age.

Any B&O center should be able to look at it with no trouble. The local B&O(Danish) center took my AV9000 and send it on to Struer to be serviced as it was completly dead with only red light in the bubble and showing error 1.

The cost of the service was around £425 as someone had been there before trying to fix it. It depends on the Beovision really.

    I had the following trouble:

    Set top controller

    Tuner defective

    General soldering

    Powersupply

I got it home and it worked great for a few days. I then found a video with Jimi Hendrix that I had not watched for some time only to find the red light flash to green and then red so back to the shop once more no extra charge. They missed something.

Once done you got a great Beovison for some time to come that I can tell you. However it would be the best to at least have some Beolabs for the front speakers allthough the center speaker is good.

    £425 is outrageous.

This kind of issue should be solved for nearly nothing ... the power supply can be taken from an MX4000, 6000, 7000, LX5000, 6000, MS6000, LS5000, LS6000 etc.  All of which can be bought for peanuts.

Re: AV 9000 issue- monitor problem

    Thanks for the information/ advice.

It is a great TV and the sound even with the centre speaker only is really something special.

Regarding model information, the details i can see on the back of the monitor are- Beovision 9000- Type 43/05 MTA SW 1.2

    Regarding the fault;

I have contacted the local B&O service centre who quoted me $800Aud which is about 500GBP, and stated that the issue was likely to be a power supply failure. I got the impression that he wasn't really interested in looking at it, why else would you quote such a high price from the outset, without even looking at the machine?

Anyway, there is a guy i know here in Melbourne who works on old valve amplifiers, and has worked on TVs before, I am considering asking him to have a look at it for me.

So my next question is; Is the repair of B&O goods a super specialised area, or could a rather competent electronic technician be able to diagnose and repair these units? Does it have to be a B&O man that does the work?

I'm also considering listing it on Ebay and letting the local market decide if they want to pursue the repair/ salvation of this great B&O home entertainment unit.

    Thanks< Lee

Re: AV 9000 issue- monitor problem

If 425£ seems much the wonderfull thing is how long into the future it will work. Besides what do you get for that price anyway?

Any other AV9000 still running has the high posible of needing service at some point due to the powersupply which as we have said allready here is the failure point of AV9000 and MX when they reach a certain age.

Your AV9000 is the second edition with the Beolink 5000 as standard.

The price quote is high but the truth is that he can't say before he has it on his workbench and gone through it all. He properly has experience doing Beovision MX and a few AV9000 or at least know what goes wrong with these. It could be that mid '90s is old to him for a Beovision and you are not the first with a powersupply problem. If you insist he will do it. In Denmark we got the option of having B&O look at the unit first and give a price quote for the service.

Doing TV work takes good skills and knows how many VOLTS thats on the inside.

If the guy is skilled enough to follow the workshop guide for MX on this site he might be able to do it.

The fault is in the monitor not the bottom vcr part.

As for getting a spare powersupply from a cheap MX etc. sounds good but they are just as old or defective when it comes down the line.

I know my limits to that sort of work so that's why I send it in for pro service. B&O knows their own stuff best(Beovisions) for the most part. With older audio Dillen wins.

I don't think the market is high for a defective AV9000 even on Ebay. The vcr, Pro logic 1, CTR and only 28 inch screen is not really attractive these days. Then you can only offer pickup as it weighs alot for 2 guys. Again no Beolabs for surround or the MPAV9000(overtoure) audio. In a link mode it can only be Master so use it for a beedroom with the 7-40 in the living room? That can't be done.

You are just selling a problem on in that case.

If you were in the UK, I would sort it for £50 and give you a 3 month warranty :)

Re: AV 9000 issue- monitor problem

This makes me want a AV9000 to replace my BC1, when it dies. Apparently the BC1 is not a good item to have once it is old, tired / faulty...

Good luck with the repair! Friedmett has offered very good advice

Re: AV 9000 issue- monitor problem

Thank you for the comments Friedmett, for your information regarding the model, the common faults, and your description of the repair of your unit.

It is a relief to know that the issue is a common one for this machine and that the parts could possibly sourced cheaply if they can be found.

Thanks for the offer to repair nobby, and if you are on holiday in Melbourne, look me up and ill shout you a beer or two.

Now, the only matter left is to consider where to spend my money as i also am the owner of an MX7000, which is currently working well still. At the moment, i think i can only afford to continue using the MX7000 and put the other machine in storage untill i can invest into its repair.. i'll store it with my old Husaberg FE501, which is another "best of its era" machine that has no longer any market value.

Thank you all for your comments,

    A great website also...
