    BM6500 No response to remote!

I have a Beomaster 6500 which does not respond to any remotes.

I have tried MCP6500 (works OK on another 6500 sysyem), Beolink 1000 and Beo4 - Nothing happens.

The Beomaster seems to work work OK in that it will play sources if you select them . Just no remote control?????

    What to do??

    Regards Graham

You must know everything about options, so nothing about that...

I had a BM7000 (well, still have at the GF's place) which had a really lousy remote control range, both in and out. Sometimes it worked relatively well, sometimes I had to take the remote almost next to the front panel to get any reaction. Cured by replacing the caps on the CPU module - as well as some others, but I presume the unstable power on the CPU and the IR transceiver, which is on the same board, caused the problem.

Of course the actual IR receiver circuit or the processor itself can have faults as well, but I don't know how likely that would be.

Yes, my first thought was "options" but the BM won't accept ANY remote commands, not even STBY!

Not sure if this help but some time ago I had a BM5500 that did the same and I took it to Neils (nobby) who put an ocilloscope on it and the conclusion was an IC (?) chip was playing up. I know you know him so might be worth a bell & see if he remembers.

Re: BM6500 No response to remote!

If it has a wrong option set, it will react on almost nothing, not even a standby command.
Only command it will react on is a new option setting.
I don't remember if the correct setting is option 0 or 1, but that's by far the most
common fault in situations like this.
    Did you try it ?

Yes, I tried it but no success.

How do you re-set the option if the BM will not accept any command from any remote, even SOUND,1,STORE from a Beolink 1000???

I must admit to being baffled!!

I suppose you could solder out the litihum battery and leave it overnight.

There is a reset pin on the CPU board, that will enter the service mode. With a special command you can clear all data on the NV RAM and program the BM to basic settings.

If you disconnect the lithium cell, then some data of the radio section must be recalibrated... i'm sure you will not want that.

You have a manual? There the service mode is documented.

But i think that the 8032 CPU chip is dying, seen this several times on 6500/7000 boards. Especially when this chip is replaced by a new faster one of the 80C32x2 series, ir reception goes wrong. An internal status register is written wrong with the newer cpu's.

The BM6500/7000 will only work with Philips or original Intel CPU's. All newer chips like the still available 80c32x2 will not work. It must be a real old 80c32... meanwhile very hard to get.

The reason for this defect is probably plugin/out a device or link system without disconnecting power.

Thanks fir the info. I don't have a service manual and the one on site is only a partial scan.

Is it possible  for you to PM or email me the relevent page?

Re: BM6500 No response to remote!

Maybe we can ask Die_Bogener for a scan of the servicemanual for our download section ?
The reset procedure is not described in any of my manuals either.

How do you trigger "Test Mode".

I have scoured the board and the circuit diagram and can't find a shorting point!

Try optioning the unit whilst holding down 'mute' on the front panel..

Re: BM6500 No response to remote!

I know it's of no use right now and until Die Borgener gets back to you and tells you where the test mode is Beocentral has some old Beomuse write ups on problems with B&O chips.

Just informative for those that haven't read it.

Re: BM6500 No response to remote!

Thanks to a good friend, I now have the proper service manual and here
    is the NVRAM reset procedure:

To enter Testmode, press "Radio" (on the MCP or Beolink 1000) and short 4TP1 briefly.
4TP1 is found at the solderside of the processor board, right behind the leftmost
of the two large connectors. Be careful not to short anything else.
    Then press "7".
After about 5-6 seconds, the display should now read "88".

    This will:
    - erase stored FM/AM programmes
    - set Bass/treble/balance/loudness to neutral
    - set volume to 26
    - set option to 1
    - set clock date to 890101

To exit Testmode, press standby or pull the mains plug.

I suppose it will wipe the timers as well? Good info.

Any chance of getting the service manual on site? The lack of proper manuals for these later models has annoyed me greatly...

But my BM6500 does not respond to the remote!! I will have another look at it tomorrow.

Re: BM6500 No response to remote!

If it will play radio, you can put it in testmode.
Of course, there can also be an electronic fault in the Beomaster.

I am thinking that there may be be a fault in the IR receiver or perhaps it's amplifier. I will try to isolate.
