Beovox 3702 speaker developing a buzz.

I have a pair of 3702 Beovox speakers which have given excellent service for very many years. One of them seems to have developed a minor rattle or buzz, particularly at low frequencies. It sounds as if something may be loose inside the box. These speakers are so beautifully built that I can't see a way to open the box to investigate this rattle. I suspect that I just need to get the front off to see if something's loose but I don't want to damage it. I am not clear whether the metal surround strip comes off with the black screen or if I need to just remove the black screen.

Can someone please help with the best procedure for getting access to the interior (wherever the rattle may be). If you also have any suggestion on where a rattle could originate, that would also be useful. I have had the speakers for more than 30 years and I am anxious to keep them in use as they are just superb.

    Thanks

    Mike Busuttili

You will need to get the front off. Martin will know more than me but the usual method with this type of speaker is to use a broad flat piece of metal - a wall paper scraper works well for me - and place this between the black cloth and the metal surround. The grille is often held on with magnets though sometimes there are plastic clips. The woofer will normally be removed to access the cross over.

Thanks Peter. I'll have a look inside to see if anything's loose.

Probably the woofer surrounds that have rotted away.
It's fixable by sending the woofers to a refoam'er - or I can maybe help
you to a pair of already refurbished original woofers if needed.

The front grills are glued to the aluminum trim and will lever off by gently inserting f.e. a wide spatula
between the alu trim and the black grill and lift the gril out gently.
The aluminum trim stays on the wooden cabinet.
Work around gently and patiently and it will eventually come off.
Glue it back on using contact glue - just a few drops, not the whole way around or you will
never be able to open them again.

Nice speakers, not too many still around - worth restoring !

Hi, sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

You were absolutely right. The woofer surrounds had rotted away. See photo...

As a temporary measure i have trimmed the rough edges so that nothing comes into contact and it has made quite a difference. At least there is no buzz. What might the price of a replacement speaker be? It does not look too difficult to fit (I hope).

Did you check the woofer in the other speaker ?
I have two original 3702 woofers, refoam'ed, tested and ready to mount.

I haven't looked at the other one yet.

What would be your price for the replacement 3702 woofers?

I suggest you do so, it will most likely look similar.
