What do all of you B&O owners think of the 3D HDTV craze?

I've been following CES via engadget and can't help but to notice this 3D TV is almost out of control!  Seems to be a huge variety of different types of technology incorporated in these TVs, glasses that need to be worn, etc.

I've never been a fan of the 3D movies that come out in the US, and wonder if this is really going to catch on or not.  I can't see wearing glasses every time I want to watch TV!

Sky Hd will be doing a 3D channel later this year and the Tv set's can do 2 and 3d so you will not have to wear the Glasses all the time, just when you watch 3D.

By the end of this year 3D could be the next thing but I think it will best be suited to Home projection on a projector, some of them will be floating around this year too!.

The sony Ps 3 also can do 3D just needs an softwear up-date and its ready to go!

    Just add a 3d Tv.

Be  great if B&O could do an up date for the Bv7-40 Mk 4 and 55 as the screens can run at the 120hz which is the min needed,so would just need a Ir emitter to send info to the Glasses for 3D effect.

One other thing, what happens if 3D does take off,who would want a norm 2d screen,so would all the 2d  screens  be un-sellable.

    Bv7-55 & Bv7-32...Blue,lab1's x4,Yes4Blue, 6000x4Blue,Beocom6000 Blue,Beo5.Oh what a Blue set-up & a Beosound 5...After all,its Bang&Olufsen!

Is the 3D television technology complete different than the normal Lcd televisions?

At this juncture of technology, I predict that 3D TV will end up being the video equivalent of The quadraphonic debacle that filtered through the audio industry in the 1970's.

The Tv's I believe have Ir emitters built in to  send info to the glasses, also the screen may have a diffrent sort of glass front cover on/accross the screen.

Was thinking Tv'ss like the Bv7 Mk 4 and the 7-55 could be up graded maybe just new front glass cover and add ir emitter somewhere, then ..hey presto you old Bv is 3d as long as it 120hz and above.

Adoption won't become widespread until there is a clear industry standard and that's a long away. Most Tv output is still made and watched in SD and not HD because of cost and bandwidth issues and this will apply x10 to 3D  Avatar cost over $200 million to make and the costs will stay sky high for years to come so 3Dtv will remain a niche product for the foreeable future..

It will spread like plague once the p0rn industry catches on. No sooner, no later.

My gut tells me it's garbage. I'm sure that technology will sort out the issues of watching without glasses (exists today, but with viewing angle & distance limitations), but I'm more worried about how the actual content creators will utilize the techniques. Everything from scene blocking up will have to be re-evaluated to either make an impact or not. I can't say with confidence that multi-channel audio has truly been utilized and integrated and 3D is going to be a lot more distracting when carried out poorly.

Re: What do all of you B&O owners think of the 3D HDTV craze?

The dawn of the new dimension is with us with 3D movies available on Blu-ray being released constantly now. Sony claims it is intending to make the lead in 3D TVs. The NX9003D TV will be available mid year, but one still needs to wear the Sony active shutter glasses at 60 GBP each, which begs the question, what is so special about the Sony TV, other than its six degree slant? I have been watching 3D Blu-rays on 64" Plasma HDTV, surround sound, with 3D glasses from France and the experience is excellent. So 2D screens are certainly not redundant as long as they are 1080p and 1080i.

    Welcome back & HNY.

Any particular recommendations of 3D movies that are good for home viewing?

Until Avatar my experiences had only been specialised outlets at Disney, MGM and Universal theme parks - interesting yet contrived to accentuate the experience - and often with special enhancements, in the case of Disney's Muppets in 3D I think the seats also had special engineering for vibration and gusts of air.

But Avatar blew me away - not just the 3D as technology, but how it had been seamlessly adopted by the film maker - the 3D-ness was unobtrusive yet pervasive.

So I am interested in whether Cameron has established a new level on the art of film making, or have other directors and their photographers been as good in understanding how to use this medium.

First B&O (1976) was a Beogram 1500 ... latest (2011) change has been to couple the BL11 with the BL6Ks *sounds superb*

Re: What do all of you B&O owners think of the 3D HDTV craze?

Ed, HNY to you too and greetings from freezing London!

I can recommend the following three Blu-rays which covers model animation, cartoon and a slasher movie - they provide an interesting glimpse into the exciting developments in 3D movie making.  Monsters vs Aliens Blu-Ray DVD, purely to watch the animation of the hilarious B.O.B's big break, which runs for about 20 minutes - it is a delight for young and old.

Animated adventure, Coraline (3D) (Blu-ray) I found fascinating as a good example of an immersive experience into a fantasy.   The behind the scenes "extras" is excellent, as they explain and demonstrate how the models were painstakingly made and then animated and captured in 3D. The movie was made by passionate people who spent months creating and moving the models in sequence. They show the camera gear in use.

My Bloody Valentine (3D) (Blu-ray) is a slasher film and is worth watching, but a bit OTT in terms of baseball bats etc jumping out of the screen.

It is worth purchasing sturdier glasses than using the complimentary cardboard framed ones provided with the movies. The 3D TV glasses are different from the 3D glasses for looking at printed 3D images and 3D images on the computer.

There are some exceptional people (Bob Angell & Arthur Wooster) who have been filming since the 50s,  I saw some 50s documentaries of "The Queen in 3D" on Channel 4 recently.

I'm not even using Blu-Ray DVDs, so don't expect me to replace my BV7 with a new 3D TV, that's just another marketing trick to make us spend money..again.

Next year will be another craze..the end of uncompressed audio maybe? That would make sense, with broadband Internet becoming faster & more reliable & fully wireless with 802n protocol.Wink

    Reunion Island is greeting you!
