Hello to all.

From my Beo (type 2501) is Cd part broken. It dosen't recognize disc at all.

My idea is to change hole cd-unit. Could someone to tell me what is the type of this player.

I think that it is Philips CDM-2/29 or CDM-2/10?

Changing will happen in local B&O service but I would buy this part myself. I will get that part much cheaper...

Hello and welcome to Beoworld.

I am fairly sure that a replacement CD unit is not available.  However, changing the electrolytic capacitors on the CD unit and its control board will probably be enough to bring it back to life.  I have made the replacement to two BC9000s and it was 100% successful; they even played CDRs after the repair...

Depending on the exact version of deck used in your Beocenter, capacitor kits are available.

I don't think you can - the one used is mechanically B&O specific as far as I know. It may still be designated a CDMthis/that, but it wasn't used in any other device. B&O spares haven't been available for a long time now.

You could probably transplant the laser arm from another type of mechanism, but that would be a silly way to start as your problem most probably isn't the laser!

The Beocenter type number is not enough to tell which type of drive is mounted.
I need the 5-digit number etched in the copper tracks near one corner on the servo board.
Something like f.e. 17011 or 34114.
Alternatively a photo of the board.

I have this same problem in Beocenter 9000. CD just spins couple of seconds and then opens the door.

How many capacitors there is to change? And what are the values of the capacitors?

I work with electronics so I should have the skills to do job. If I just know which capacitors to work with.

If you know electronics you will easily be able to count the electrolytics and read their values on the
servo board, there's about a handful or so, depending a little on the exact version of board.
Problem is that at least one of them needs to be a specific brand and type for the focus
circuit to work. That one being the blue Philips axial which has proved a problem to find since Phillips
stopped producing capacitors but a cap kit has been put together for convenience and it contains
the correct cap for the job.

I believe it's the servo board that is B&O specific and you cannot source these on the web. B&O no longer supply them.

The capacitor kit is the way to go as long as it contains a working substitute for C2103 which is a Blue Philips axial type 33 micro farads 16volt. For some reason, as yet unknown, it would appear to be the only type to work reliably.

If you search the forum for C2103 you will find a number of threads which discuss this at length.

Well, there are no secrets. But as I am not a sponsor of this site I cannot put ads up in public.

However, it is commonly known that capacitor kits, lamp kits, belt sets and other service kits exists for
many purposes, though mainly for 1965-1990 audio stuff.
The kits I can supply are put together by me and are available only from me.
The kits are put together only for convenience to other repairers and owners wanting to - and capable of doing their own repairs.

After diagnosing the same faults many times and answering the same questions endlessly, a kit is often put
together. Telling the owner to grab a kit to solve the problem leaves me with more time for other repairs
and diagnoses to other and more stubborn faults.
Keeping the wonderful B&O things going is a hobby for me and has been so for more than 30 years.
I am not running a business and I am not making any money on the kits.

It's not a secret either which components B&O (read: Philips) put in the CDM boards but it's not that easy to make
an exact capacitor list because the Beocenters 8x00 and 9x00 (and Beogram CD3500/4500 etc.) came with several
different CD decks and even more different servo board versions.
Kits exists for some versions, the ones I have come across and documented, and new kits can be put
together for versions not already documented.
Often, having the owner email photos and information is the only way to document boards that I may never
come across myself and it may help many others.

The cost of a CDM kit is typically in the EUR 12 range and that includes packing/postage.
It's not uncommon for me to offer a free kit in exchange for information on boards and machines not already
documented, as many of you will know.

...and that is a very reasonable price for not having to hunt several sources, and getting components that are known to be fit for the purpose.

I can also testify that attempting the repair without the correct type of C2103 will be time & money wasted.

Now the Beocenter is back in business!!!

I finaly did got my BC to my place.

Cd unit is CDM 4/24 and here is photo of servo board. I hope with this information is enough to get new capacitor kit.

Now those capasitors are changed... but still problems.

 

1) WILL SPIN, TRY TO FOCUS, DISPLAYS TRACK NUMBERS, DOESNT PLAY

2) AS ABOVE, BUT DOESNT DISPLAY NUMBERS

3) TRYS TO SPIN, TRY FOCUS, THEN THEN DOOR OPENS READY FOR ME TO TAKE THE CD OUT.

Have you tried cleaning the optics? They may have dusted up a bit when you're tinkering around in the unit.

 

Could be cracked solder joints at the voltage regulator(s)
with the small cooling fins at the bottom center board next to the CD deck.
