    Iphone/touch question

    ThankHi:

I wonder if anyone can help me with a quandry I am in at the moment. I have wanted an Iphone for ages yet am tied to a new (prior to Iphone being released on it) Orange contract. I could buy a pay as you go variant but I know that despite best intentions of using my mobile for calls and the iphone for other things I will end up using the Iphone for both and thus wasting £50 a month.

I need an mp3 player (I do not think that B&O offers much in this market) and have thought about getting the Ipod touch. I know nothing about Macs but have been told that the touch is a poor performing product as it is almost identical to the iphone yet you cannot make calls on it so most people opt for the iphone. I do not really care for the call making aspect of the Iphone but am very impressed with the VLC app which my friend uses to control his media centre pc. My questons therefore are:

    1. Can I use the touch to control VLC in this way?
    2. Can I download other apps to the touch (apart from those that hinge on telephony)?
    3. In what other ways does the touch/iphone differ?

    Thanks

    Re: Iphone/touch question

1: There is an application that allows remote control of VLC, I believe

2: You can download games, internet radio players, practical tools

3: The iPod Touch has the same processor as the iPhone 3G, but the iPhone of course has the option to be on 3G network, the iPod only has the WiFi option.

I think that the iPod touch is a great mp3 player with a lot of other funtions. I keep my music libary of 40+ gb, 6 full length videos, almost 1000 photos and 85 apps on my 64 gb iPog Touch.

I have both. The touch is slimmer and works very well as a remote. You can download apps no problem and it can also be used for email  and internet browsing as it has a wi-fi capability. It has no camera and the newer iPhone features such as compass and maps are missing.

    Re: Iphone/touch question

you can use all of the apps on your ipod touch.  I'm not sure what you mean by "poor performing product" as the ipod touch has sold millions and is very popular.  Just think of it as an iphone without the phone part, and the rest is almost identical and the ipod is certainly the equal or better than the iphone in terms of specs of processor, etc.  Plus, the ipod touch comes in bigger sizes.

check macrumors.com for complete information, buying guids, etc.  It is THE mac/ipod/iphone website.

As far as the processor, from the website TUAW:

"The newly introduced third-generation iPod touch contains a S5L8922X series processor, which is a slight numerical increment over the processor in the iPhone 3GS. Also, as revealed in the teardown by iFixit, the model number etched on the processor in the new iPod touch, 339S0075 ARM, also shows a slight numerical increment of the 3GS processor, which is 339S0073 ARM."

    Re: Iphone/touch question

My wife has an iPhone. I have an iTouch and a Serene.  The iTouch is very good. My wife wanted to buy me an iPhone for Christmas but I told her not to as I like both my Serene and the iTouch.

Buy the iPhone on PAYG and put your contract sim in it, then.  Problem solved.

    Re: Iphone/touch question

A few of the apps do not work on the iPod touch, only on the iPhone. The application can be limited to only work on the iPhone. One example I have is a TV manager for German IPTV: Only works on the iPhone.

    Cheers,
