    Passthrough or Amp?

    Hi All,

I am about to link my 3 Avants and would appreciate some advice.

All three are essentially in a line, ie living room Avant - (15ft) - Bedroom 1 Avant - (10ft) - Bedroom 2 Avant.

I have a DVD1 and Virgin V+ box attached to the living room Avant which I'd like to be able to control / see in the other rooms. I would also like to receive the roof aerial signal in the two bedrooms (currently the roof aerial connection is in the living room only)

My question is therefore whether I should go with the passthrough option so I would be running one RF cable from living room to bedroom 1, then 1 RF cable from bedroom 1 to bedroom 2.

    Or

Should I go with an amp, meaning I would be running two RF cables from the living room, one terminating in bedroom 1 and the other in bedroom 2. If so, can anyone recommend one since my dealer tells me theres no need to go with the B&O version?

The advantages with the first choice are obvious - less cabling, easier to install, cheaper (no need for an amp). I'm sure the later option would give a better result but it would have to be significantly better to warrant the extra effort.

Your thoughts would be appreciated as always!

I would amplify - I have just changed from an Avant to a BV10 with RF amplifier and the picture in my link room is much better. Wish I had put in an amplifier years ago.

    Re: Passthrough or Amp?

Thanks for your response Peter - was beginning to wonder if everyone was out Xmas shopping!

I was thinking of getting the B&O amp as recommended by Keith but my dealer insists its not necessary and that any quality amp would do.

    Could you recommend one Peter?

    Thanks

    Re: Passthrough or Amp?

Please chaps - any advice would be really appreciated.

I have searched the forums for an answer and other than Keith's detailed FAQs on the B&O amp, I can't seem to find much.

I believe that RF amplification is needed for post-Avant TVs so I'm sure there are plenty of you out there who could advise on what you have used.

If the concensus is 'just get the B&O one' then thats fine. I intended to do so anyway until my local dealer told me there was no need. I guess this is also true due to the fact that I am only feeding two other TVs from the master + the Coax runs will be relatively short.

The Avant does not need an amplifier officially but the later sets do, as you say. I actually amplify the RF from my aerial as it goes to a number of rooms. I confess to using a cheap no name one which works fine though my BV10 has the B&O one to send signal to the link room. I would believe your dealer!
