    Hard drive always running ?

    Hi all,

I have noticed the hard drive in my Beomedia 1 is always running (I can hear it). I think this must have an adverse effect on its lifetime.

Is the HDD always spinning on your Beomedias/Beomasters too ?

I can't speak for the product in general but its always been better for a hard drive to spin constantly than to be shut on/off.  Most failures occor when a drive is turned on/off.

Thanks for your advice PentaIII. I have not read much litterature about common HDD failures, but I see that heat and vibration are strong ennemies. Turning off the hard drive will cool down the drive (mecanical + electronic parts), that 's why I was asking about this. I assume B&O tested it under severe conditions as for the other products.

Re: Hard drive always running ?

Excessive heat will shorten the hard drive life, but otherwise it is quite a normal condition for them to run warm - I recall a recent study by Google (they obviously know quite of bit about running thousands and thousands of hard drives continuously), and the end result was that it was actually better for reliability to run them a little warm than cooled down to room temp or less. Some time back somebody posted here pictures of the Beomedia 1 insides, and the thermal design seemed quite good to me (unlike many regular PC enclosures). I don't think the hard drive will be too hot in there.

Thermal cycling due to turning on and off will be a stress to both electronics and mechanics. From my work, I know that before turning off a server that has been running for years uninterrupted, it is a good idea to take a complete backup just prior to shutdown... there's a good chance that the hard drive (or the power supply) will not start again after it has cooled down.

On the other hand, at home I have a HDR of sorts (a Linux machine running VDR) and I have configured it to shut down completely when unused, and the next scheduled recording is more than half an hour away (due to noise and the electric bill). No problems in almost four years since I built it.

Hard drive reliability is a controversial subject in general talk because it is all about statistics. Almost everybody has experienced one or two examples either way, but they won't tell anything about the big picture - any given hard drive can fail any given moment no matter how you treat it. The only way an individual can fight the statistics is to take backups Smile

Thank you very much Tournedos Smile

These are very instructive informations ! Yes - thumbs up  All right: I will not try to find a way to turn off the drive. Anyway the drive contains the system partition which is used often, it would need a very short timeout to spin down as a matter of fact.

I have Acronis backups and robocopy is my friend since I unfortunately already experienced several HDD failures (one of these when transfering 900 photos of my recent trip to Tokyo from my digital camera Surprise luckily I was copying and not moving the photos...).

Re: Hard drive always running ?

Good advice to leave the drive running, if you can.

Specifically, it is the bearings in the hard drives that begin to wear down and fail when the HDD is turned on and coming up, or turned off and coming down.

For that matter, it is the same condition one faces with with an aging HDD in a PC. If you can audibly hear them grinding, or getting louder, it is time to have them checked or replaced. ( Sounds like my knees ).

    Thanks Swiss Laughing

No suspect noise at the moment, I have converted many Apple Lossless albums to MP3 then uploaded them to my BM1. Time to enjoy !
