Good luck Nick!
Seriously - £300 won't get you anything near a decent pair. For that money you'd be lucky to get some that were heavily marked, with all eight mid-ranges shot and in need of re-foaming. Double the budget and you move into sensible territory. To give you an idea, my mint Beovox (always cheaper than Beolab) Pentas were £600 and I thought I got a good deal.

I notice that Lifestyle-AV have a pair of Beovox (passive) penta's on ebay now at £295 - but they do need the mid-ranges sorting.
You wont find a pair of Beolabs for £300 - I was very lucky finding my pair of beolab penta's (mkII's) for £470.
The previous guys were right in saying circa £600+ will get you a good pair of Beolabs.
The mid ranges can be refoamed (cheaper than replacements) and you can buy the correct rubber surrounds from an ebay store known as good_hifi (or something very similar).
I've been told than to replace all mid-range drivers with new units - approx. £200. I dont know this for a fact but I think it would be in this area.

timhanna:
add £200 more and get BeoLab 6000?
My friend, I have owned a pair of 6000's for many years - they are just NO COMPARISON to the Penta Labs.
The Penta's overall sound, bass, power, looks and overall quality are WAY WAY superior to the 6000's.
I wouldn't say no to a pair of 8000's (in addition to my Penta's that is - NOT instead of!!) - but I wouldnt have 6000's again - they are inferior in my opinion.

Have to agree, comparing BeoLab 6000 to BeoLab Penta is like comparing a Fiat 500 to an M3.
Still, i wish Nick the best of luck finding his Pentas within budget. If you don't try, you'll never know!

hehe, I wasnt implying that the 6000 were better :P Just that the BL6000 are the cheapest active speakers I know that usually dont need any work doing to them.
Yes sure - point taken

If it isn't a silly queston, why didn't you just buy the Lab 5000s he had for £200 more? Seems like less messing around to me!

I got a pair of mint 5000 vox and if I can sell on the 3000's for a fair price its likely to be a saving - i intend to look at the 5000's when i pick up the swag may come away with 2 pairs if the big uns are still up for grabs!
A little off centre logic wise I agree!

Hi thanks for that! I have sent him a mail, as it doesnt state whether they are active version or not. Its hard to tell without pics, I don't fancy a 4hr drive to find they are beovox! I will keep you all posted, fingers crossed
Cheers Nick

these are labs, an offer has gone in! here is his reply.
Greetings Nick and yes they are the Beolab active / B&O version of passive if you bypass the amps in them - the problem was all about the 5500 receiver master control not speaking to the speakers OR the the other way around - two of us spent an entire afternoon trying figure out what the problem was (we had wiring diagrams as well) but it all got too complicated as the fault was intermittent at the time also on one speaker - and during this time the dratted control stopped speaking to the recaiver also - I am going to try them again using both an ordinary integrated amp for passive and a CD machine using a passive pre for active - I have someone coming to see them tomorrow also and he is needing them as passive, so maybe a bargain to be grabbed if they work okay as they did previously when passive and active with anything except the B&O machines...
Goodness did any of that make sense...
James
Does this make sense to anyone? Can I get any spares if need be?
Cheers Nick
