    Retipping?

Hello Beoworlders, I have a small distortion problem with my newly aquired Beogram 8002 with an original MMC2 stylus. I have tried all kinds of tracking forces, even over the 2 gram mark, but there is still an awful lot of unwanted distortion. The arms are parrallel, the TT are working great(refurbished 9 years ago, never used scince). The TT plays wonderful with my father's MMC2, this rules out that the TT has anything to do with the distortion. I suspect the MMC2 for being too stiff in the suspension due to being stagnant all those years. I know that the PU has been used a little more than my Father's (the TT belonged to my uncle, he listened a little bit more to the vinyl back in the days), but the difference in soundstage is huge!

I have wondered if Axel also changes the rubber suspension when he is retipping a stylus? Should i order a new Soundsmith MMC instead?

Axel will change the stylus, the cantilever and the suspension. The results are excellent!

    Graham:

Does Axel do MMC20 series or just MMC 1-5?

Also does he have access to ruby cantelevers?

I have two MMC20CL’s and one MMC6000 that have suspension issues, do you know what Axel charges in US dollars for his service?

    Not sure about MMC 20s.

Benny at Amina Audio in the US retips MMC 1-5 for $100 USD.

He can do MMC20s but says he needs to cut off the front of the cartridge so he won't be able to preserve the look.

    Re: Retipping?

    Hello,

    Inspect the tip.

I have a 20EN whose tip was slightly out of the cantilever, thus making a wrong lateral angle and producing what you describe. I managed to push it back into place with micro pliars (it is diamond after all) and it now works perfectly, even on very busy passages or direct cuts. On close inspection, the tip doesn't seem to be glued to the cantilever, but just "embedded" into it.

    Worth a try methinks.

    Hi Derek,

He certainly does MMC20 series and can use saphire cantilevers. Not sure about Ruby.

Suggest you email him direct. The conversation can be in English.

His prices are in Euros so it will depend on the conversion rate at the time. He will respond to an email or he has an ebay shop now.

    Re: Retipping?

I believe the shafts are all sapphire; however it doesn’t matter as Sapphire and Ruby are exactly the same mineral: corundum. The ONLY difference would be color, Sapphire is blue and Ruby is red. This from an old Jeweler….
