Which one ot choose / Laquelle choisir

    Bonjour, Hi yall!

    *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*

Would it be possbile to obtain your expert advices to help choose a tangential arm (drive) Beogram deck. I've read a bit about the diffent models troughout the years but I need to come to a conclusion leading to a purchase now. So durability, stylus availability quality of desing, sound quality. Your input will be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Alain,

Much will depend on how you plan to use it. IE:- what are you hoping to connect it to and is remote control necessary? A little more detailed information will get you the answer you need.Smile

In essence there are three different types:

    1. Beogram 4000 - (or 4002/4004/6000) These are the best made decks and I think they are the best looking - not remote control unless you get a 4004 and 2400 Beomaster but you have to get up to clean the record anyway! Very easy to take apart and the later 4002 and 4004 are not too difficult to service. - My choice - the later 4004 as it is the one most likely to work!

    2. Beogram 8000/8002. Less well made but should have better performance (but from experience possibly not.) A number of service issues - difficult to take apart but Dillen now makes the tacho disc so early 8000s are not the write offs they used to be. The 6002 is not the same - more like a 4002 but less well made. These do offer datalink and the 8000 offered a brush to clean the stylus automatically - most people remove this the first time they see it in operation! Laughing

    3. Beogram 3000/5500/4500/7000 etc. These are all exactly the same and are lightweight. Pretty reliable but lots of cheap plastic in the construction. They do offer full datalink.

As far as cartridges are cooncerned, this is the one area where things have got better. Soundsmith cartridges offer modern sound at a price and Axel can retip any sort of B&O cartridge.

So to summarise, as far as Tangential tracking decks are concerned:

Best sounding - Beogram 4000 - but not that easy to get working

Most reliable - Beogram 5500 etc - Remote control but not as good a sound.

Best design - that is your call - I think the 4000 but you may think different.

The advantage of the 8000/8002 is that if you get a Soundsmith cartridge, you cannot see it!

    Thanks for answering Chris,

The Beogram would be used with a Beomaster 5000, possibly a Beosound 4.

And also as a collectible. I just read some more in another thread, and it seems the 4000/4002/4004 are the desirable one? What do you think.

Thanks again for your insight Peter.

I had read another thread and I was coming to the same conclusion on the 4000. I have my eyes on a 4002, supposedly fully functioning. Should I get it, I'd have to see how iin how good a condition it is after being shipped to me.

I would always recommend picking up Beograms in person. They really do not travel well and if it is working when it is sent, it won't be when it arrives. There are plenty of Beograms about so one will come up reasonably close.

Agree 100% with Peter re:- collecting in person and also your choice of the BG400* seriesSmile

You need to aware though that it will play directly via the Phono input of a Beomaster 5000 but will require an external RIAA preamp to use with a Beosound 4 (the Beomaster 5000 has a RIAA already fitted).

I also would prefer the 400* series to any other turntable. Not only because of superior construction and design (have in mind that the design is +35 years old!), but also because of the MMC20 series styli. In my opinion they sound way better and a lot warmer than the newer MMC 1-5 series. Construction-wise, they are much bigger and can handle more use/abuse than its newer counterparts.

    Beocenter 9300, Beogam CD50, Beocord 5500, Beomaster 3400, Beomaster 4400, 2 Beogram 4000, Beomaster 8000, 2 beogram 8002, Beovox S-75, Beovox MS150.2, Beovox RL6000, Beovox S-35, Beomaster 6000, 2 Beocord 9000, Beocord 8004, Beocord 5000, Form 1, 2x Beolink 1000, Beo4, MX3500, LS4500. Re: Which one ot choose / Laquelle choisir

    Hi,

I currently own an 8000 and a 6006 (soon for sale!) and I think these are little gems. All they need is a good cartridge really. A word of warning, the MMC20EN or CL need 330pF capacitance to work properly; even then they do sound a tad dull high up, especially compared to CD. I am expecting an SMMC20EN. My preamp is a Hiraga "Le Tube" and as an amp I use an old modified Ampliton TS 3000. Along with the Beograms, the sound is gorgeous!

I also own a Technics SL-1200 mkII/RB 300 but it doesn't sound or look anything like my beloved B&O's!

    Salut,

    Jacques
