Beolab Penta 3 Mid-range replacement drivers

    Merci

Bonjour, I have to replace my eight mid-range drivers on my Beolab Pentas 6633. Do you know where to find some, is there are compatible speakers, or again can the foam be changed to one that will not rot over time?

    Thanks.

Replacement drivers are available from B&O dealers. The full set will cost around £200 in the UK

the foam surrounds can be changed to rubber surrounds wich will last probably longer than the rest of the pentas...

bought mine from good hifi for a fraction of the prices mentioned by graham.

it took me some hours of course, but I think it was worth the effort.

    Hmmmm!

Not sure that I would use rubber to replace foam. If B&O designed them with foam then that's what I would use for the replacements.

    Thanks guys,

For the sake of understanding, why are the midrange the only ones with foam when the other loudspeahers on the Pentas III are rubber ones. Used to have some RL140 manufactured at about the same time, and they were blessed with the exact same rot problems on the woofers. Can it just be an oversight from the BO engineering team?

    Bonjour root,

Would you be kind enough to confirm what size ruber surrounds you ordered fron Good Hifi? Did they fit well?

Foam and rubber have different characteristics. Some driver types have foam surrounds, some have rubber, but it's not like you have a choice - the designers select the drivers according to their electrical and acoustical parameters (and later get told by the bean counters to make another choice), not the material. So the surround material that ends up in the final product is more like a random event than a design goal or parameter.

Regarding Good Hifi, I think that if you look at their products through the eBay shop, you will find surrounds specifically for the Penta midranges. AFAIK the dimensions are a bit odd.

    Bonjour Alain-olivier

Je suis a Montreal aussi. Si t'as besoin d'aide contactez-moi.

Re: Beolab Penta 3 Mid-range replacement drivers

    Hi

This is an english forum so I'll reply in English.

I have to warn you with switching the mid-range speakers. B&O has this thing about using speakers with sometimes weird specifications and as with everything, it's sum of all the parts that make the whole thing sound good or bad. So changing them out all-together might not be the best solution.
Also the fact that they're no longer original will not do any favors to the value.

That being said, and having done a couple of penta's myself, I normally would refoam the surrounds with rubber (I also used the good-hifi ones). Foam is ok for the midranges as they don't give too much physical action, but you'll end up with the same thing over again in a couple of years. The rubber surrounds last longer (forever?) though they need some time to 'play in' and soften up a bit. I have don a pair of CX100's a couple of months with rubber surrounds and they needed playing for about a month to really get them going well.

IMO it's more important to update the caps in the cross-over to clear up the sound. That does really make a big improvement. Certainly so on those penta's. Also check the currents on the transfo's .

I'm in NDG close to Sherbrooke street, beween Decarie and Cavendish

    Thanks buddy.

I'm first going to move ahead with the midrange, then the electronics. I might need help on this since I have no knowledge on the subject. I read the projects about moving to IcePower amps with interest, but am not  there yet. You are welcome to PM me in french or email at yahoe.001@gmail.com
