    Beogram 3000 - loud output?

    Hi,

I have a Beogram 3000 (5228), which I am connecting to a non B&O amplifier. I have a DIN to RCA adapter cable connected to the phono stage of the amp (MC), an old Cyrus One. Everything works fine, except that the output from the turntable is very loud. Say if I turn the amp volume to 1 it is barely audible, but on 2 it is as loud as the CD player on 7 - which is as loud as I would normally listen to anything. This is annoying because I cannot listen to records at night, and I also worry that someone will try to play a record with the volume still on CD levels (5 say) and blow the roof up.

I first thought there might be a preamp fitted, but if plugged in the Aux input of the amp, the sound is low. Is this a known characteristic of the B&O turntables? Is there anything that can be done to reduce the output volume without affecting the sound quality?

    Thanks for your help!

    Florent.

No - it is your amplifier. The cartridge in the Beogram is essentially a Moving Magnet design and you are using a Moving Coil input. Is the input switchable?

Really? I thought (assumed??) that the SP cartridges were moving coils and the MMC ones moving magnets. The phono stage is switchable yes, I'll give that a try right now!

he, he. That solved this! Thank you very much for your help (again) Peter. I don't know where I got this idea from that it was a MC cartridge.

I feel very foolish, but really happy. I know what I am doing for the rest of the evening :)

Perfectly reasonable thought. The cartridges are actually neither but are moving iron! You will notice the output is a little bit lower than your other sources (only a bit!) and this is why!
