    installation

I am from Melbourne Australia.  I have a beosound 4 with beolab 3and now bought a beomaster 5, beovision 7-40 without the in built blu ray but has bought a pioneer bluray to connect to the tv.  I was told before that setup is not that difficult and since my place is about 150 kms away from Melbourne, I thought of doing it myself.  Plus, when I finally got a quote after nearly 2 months of waiting, I was shocked as it was about 1500 Australian dollars, about 10 percent of my new beovision and beomaster, and I still have to buy the cables.  I also would prefer doing it myself as I move my things and houses and I should know how to connect and disconnect. I am also annoyed of paying two people to do it whereas based from the quote, the other guys job is to lift it onto the table but price has doubled because of him.  Mind you, the setup is just on a table.  No wall drillings etc. just a table setup including tv, speakers.  I wrote a complaint to the BO main office but did not get a response.

Anyway, is it going to be difficult to set this up myself and any advice please.

I also forgot to mention, I will connect the beomaster to internet using wireless connection and will transfer music from laptop to beomaster using wired connection.

    Thanks

    Voltaire

    Re: installation

    Hi Voltaire,

Setting up the TV and connecting it via Masterlink to your BS 4 shouldn't be difficult at all. Connecting your BS5 should be straightforward however configuring it might be a different story.

If getting B&O to do the instal is out of the question it might be a good idea to get them to configure the BS 5 in store. The TV might also need the PUC updated so you can control the Pioneer Bluray (assuming it's on the list). I would tell the store everything you need and get them to do as much as possible there and then it should be a matter of connecting it. Sounds simple in theory.

The other thing you might want to do is haggle a bit on the cables; especially if they aren't doing the instal.

What  suburb or town are you in?

    Hi Voltaire

Setting the BeoVision7 and BeoSound4 up via Masterlink should be fairly straightfoward. As previuosly mentioned you will need the Beo5 configuring and software for the TV updating (any third party boxes that you want to control will need to be added to the PUC table in the TV). Unless you have access to the Beo5 configurator and the Bang & Olufsen service tool and softwarre, that's a job for the dealer.

I would advise against trying to use Beomaster5 wirelessly to your router. Have you considered ethernet over mains? It's easy to set up and from experience more stable and less hassle than configuring the Beomaster5 wirelessly. Using your laptop wireless shouldn't be an issue.

I sympathise with your situation. Logistics can be a pain in the bum, but it seems a bit steep to double the install charge just to send a second person to help lift the set on to the table. Couldn't they send one guy and you assist thereby halving the installation charge?

Hope you get it all set up ok.

    Regards

    Re: installation

The install quote seems relatively reasonable. Our intrepid spirits can lead us to make strange decisions and I've often been surprised that I'll spend $90 on socks and then try and fix a leaky pipe instead of paying a professional. If I could master this perverse psychology my house would be in better repair and my marriage in less turmoil!

As someone who's been doing this a long time I would highly recommend parting with a few more dollars and getting the full experience. Assuming the level of professionalism I've heard of in many of the Australian shops I know that your products will be expertly set up, the cables neatly dressed, any questions expertly dealt with, and the whole job guaranteed in ways a home brew would never qualify for. Every time I've happened upon a client who's "done it themselves" I see an electronic wreck. Cables like a spaghetti feast, crooked brackets, and worse.

And don't, as some (many [most]) on here would suggest and try and haggle and get free cables and hours of labor. This is not where the margin is. Make a good deal on the price of goods and then pay generously and willingly for the install. Then give a generous tip to the hardworking soul who put everything in and you'll find yourself in the possession of unpublished mobile numbers and more goodwill than the few bucks you would have shaved off the install fee.

There is scarcely anything in this world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little more cheaply. The person who buys on price alone is this man's lawful prey. - John Ruskin

    Re: installation

I'm from Bendigo and unfortuntely dont also have the time to be with the installers so even finding the time just to be with them is going to be a pain.

I have already had them configure the settings in store including the the pioneer bluray player and is now going to be a matter of finding the time to do it and hopefully plug and play.  If I cant make the beomaster 5 work with my computer, I think it is easy as I can just unplug it and bring it back to them.  They have also assigned everythin in store including logos in the beo5 remote.

Now with the cables, interestingly, their cables esp the hdmi is probably the cheapest in the market in relation to the Monster Cables that are around.  If you go to one of the shops here and if you're from Shep then I am pretty sure you will know that it cost about 500 to get one from Harvey Norman and they wont let you go out of the shop till you get one fo the their most expensive cable.

I am just a bit worried now that their support will be quite difficult.  I am in fact considering at some point to just get a Loewe as they have local support.

Do you have any idea of any support person in Shepparton since you are just an hour away.

    Dear Opman,

They have now configured the Beo 5 and the TV and all I have to do is set them up - I hope.   I agree that setting up the beoasound with beovision should not be that difficult as I have set the beosound  before with an LG TV and a DVD player and it was quite easy.  Dismantlingthe beosound, dvd player and old TV set up took just about 5 minutes and I have assembled and reassembled them twice already.

Re wireless connection, I have most of my things at home wireless and in my office. The only wired sonnection is the wifi modem to the phone and everything is unwired.  Problem is I have to get a static IP address so I might get a different wifi router and had it done on a n1.0.0.0 by my computer person.

    Thanks

    Re: installation

    Hi Voltaire,

I think the only people you'll get to instal in Victoria will be from Melbourne. I don't think there would be many people out there in country Vic specialising in B&O instals.

What I meant about haggling over the cables; if B&O aren't instaling the product which is part of the service then perhaps they can offset that saving with a discount on the cables.

B&O Australia is owned by B&O themselves. That means all stores in the country so you cannot shop around for the best deal. Also B&O here never discount on new products. The only reduced price that I have ever received was on a demo Beolink Active.

If you want a hand connecting everything up I'll be happy to come over and give you a hand. No cost and no obligation. I've got some relatives over there that I need to catch up with so it will be a good excuse.

    Peter
