Re: Have you seen this? Unbelievable

I'm with jbg on this one - to the extent that have tended to take a pretty dim view of people I know who have felt the need to wander down this particular avenue. To me its always screamed "look at me" - why??

I find it particularly sad when people then have to explain the significance of a seemingly random group of letters that they have payed £500 for.

I do know a chap who has "DEN 15" on a grotty old Range Rover and used to own the local petrol station - he has had it from me being a kid. (perhaps I should have also pointed out he's called Dennis).

Sorry about that - luckily I found out you are all jolly nice chaps before I found out you have private registrations and I didn't avoid you at partiesLaughingLaughing

It's all about personalising your car, and being individual.

I too scratch my head when i see people paying £500 for SD04 SBD though

I have to agree that number plates that say BAZZA or SOUSI etc just make me cringe, but I don't mind about more non-descript number plates. The ridiculous thing in the UK is that some number plates are valued in the millions. I remember being at an auction when a number plate K 10 was sold for £900,000 and this was a few years ago now too.

I have more recently been interested in having our cars with number plates that are just one after the other, i.e. AA57AAA, AA57AAB, AA57AAC etc.

Re: Have you seen this? Unbelievable

Each to thier own really but I have to agree with Graham that I personally don't "get" the idea of personalised plates. No matter how much money I had I could never pay ludicrous amounts of money for one. Maybe it's the proletariat in me?

I'm not, and never would, knock anyone for owning one though (except the Guy who drives round my home town in a hairdressers car with the plate "BIG DAN" (actually stylised B19 DAN) who just deserves to have the p$%£ taken)

A Chelsea footballer recently bought this number plate for £1.4million: FU 9. He claimed there was no closer number plate to the strong English swear word beginning in F and ending in CK, and not the word firetruck.

Re: Have you seen this? Unbelievable

When we moved over we were totally oblivious to how popular it is over here! We have two cars which we had to register and totaly missed the pointed question of "any preferences on you number?" question. Everyone here tries to get initials or some such onto their number plates (kids intitials or birth dates mainly) makes it a bit emarrassing trying to explain that the number plate has no meaning at all. We have HOL BM251 and HOL DM648. BTW if it is available you can have any number that is on the computer no charge.

Must find out if you can buy and sell them here.

What constitutes a "hairdresser's car"?  I assume it's not one that produces a series of bangs.

Thats cheap in Denmark a plate cost 1200 kr (240$) with random numbers, If you want a "BeoWorld" plate then add 6500 kr (1200$) to the 1200kr Sad

In actuality this plate works like add-on to existing license plate.  You keep your original plates but can replace with these.
I forgot how much is random plate cost is but it's less then $100.
Here in US we are usually changing our plates with cars...

Re: Have you seen this? Unbelievable

In Adelaide, Australia we have different styles of number plates to choose from, which in my opinion is a litle more rational and individual. It can change the look of the car.

I personally love the 'prestige' square Black plates with 3 or 4 numbers on them in white. With these plates, the less numbers, the more dosh they cost you. Add to the exclusivity, subsequently, these plates are generally seen on BMW, M-Bz, Jags, Lexus etc...

Here in Switzerland the possibilities of numberplates are quite limited. Every canton has his two letter abrevation. Basel for example has BS, Zurich has ZH. So the Numbers always begin with the two letters. Then depending on how big the canton is, there are more or less numbers availeable. Normally low numbers are very loved and also expensive. For BS 5 , someone paied CHF 15'000.- as far as i know.

But there are only numbers availeable, no letters or combinations of letters and numbers. So not that spectacular here

    Just to add the information...

    Germany: xx - yy zzzz

xx - Town abbrevation e.g. D for Düsseldorf, B for Berlin, VIE for Viersen (my place ;-)

    yy - 2 letters

zzzz - up to 4 numbers

yy and zzzz are random (no extra costs, just pay for the making of the plate), if you desire your own version (if available!), you need to spend an affordable extra 20€/27$.

Here in the UK I was offered K9 BLX for £950. I thought about buying it but no way would I use it on my own car. It would have been purely for financial gain. Was it a good offer? I don't know anything about plate valuations. It's a terrible number though but I'm sure someone would like it on their Lambo or something.

    K9 BLX (DOGS BLX)Whistle  Good/bad investment?
