BV3-32 and DVD1 - why all movies appearing as a small widescreen box?

I often  have to manually select FORMAT 2 on the beo4 to watch a movie which is then in rather poor quality (i'm guessing because it's zoomed), it is getting annoying! Is this just what all movies are encoded as these days?

Or is there something wrong with my setup...?
