New here. What is recaping speakers? I have S75s on the way

I just decided to get a Hi-Fi system for my living room.

I got a Beomaster 4000, along with Beovox S75 speakers off ebay, and they are being shipped hopefully soon.

In the meantime, I am gathering all the things I will need to connect my iPod, (and possibly to my PS3 game console when I watch a Blue-Ray movie, but this is not important). I currently have a Bose surround system which works great, but when I was a teenager, I somehow got a hold of a Beomaster 1400M with Beovox 2400 speakers. At the time, it was just a junk thing I found that could play my CDs. In all honesty I have NEVER EVER in my life heard anything sound better than that system. It would shake the whole house with its bass, and I could hear instruments on my favorite songs I had never heard before on all other kinds of systems I had heard them on.

And so now, many years later I decided on getting a vintage system with a good high power output to relive my teen years and enjoy my music once again. If I am able to hook it up to the PS3 system when Im watching movies, then I will be in heven.

In the meantime though, I just joined and was reading up on B&O stuff to bring myself up to speed.

What is to "recap" speakers? How much does it cost? What does it entail? Does it require special tools? Can I do it or do I need to send the speakers somewhere? Do I even need to recap them?

Thanks, and sorry for all the questions on my first post!

The electrolytic capacitors, iwhich are n the circuit that separates the high and low frequecies and sens them to the individual drivers, deteriorate with age and the values change. It is worth replacing them to regain the original sound. Old capacitors can make the sound muddy and unfocused.

Capacitors are very cheap and Dillen on site can no doubt supply you with a set for the S75. All you need us a screwdriver and a soldering iron. To get to the cross over, remove the loudspeaker drivers - start with the bass unit! The best way is to photograph what you are doing as you go along - that way you will put it back together correctly!

    Thanks for the response.

AH, I see, that makes sense. Recap, as in replacing the capacitors.

Great, I will look him up. Looks like he is on eBay. Whats his eBay store?

Im assuming i would get a "kit" that would have instructions based on some of the posts i have serached?

    Welcome to Beoworld!

Martin (username Dillen) is a user on this forum so you just need to look him up and send him a personal message (called 'start a conversation') and he will reply to you, you pay him via payypal and the capacitors arrive in the post a few days later along with instructions.

Be aware of what you might be getting yourself into though! My journey back to B&O started when I saw a cheap pair of Beoxox S30 speakers on eBay. I grew up listening to them and my father still uses them every day even though the rest of his B&O system is long gone, and I was unhappy with the speakers  attached to my  modern Hi-Fi.

Three years later I have bought three complete systems, seven pairs of speakers, won 4 phones in a prize draw and acquired five Beovision TV's. We call it 'catching the Beovirus' around these parts!

Whoow, what a collection over a short time!

Well, I hope I dont catch Beovirus just yet, although even after just purchasing the S75 speakers, I was already looking for a set of S45-2 to add to the BM4000 for Ambio, but i think I can resist for now.

I contacted Dillen, and just waiting for a response. Thank you for the tip on how to msg. him.

S45-2 speakers are one of B&Os best. Not as much bass as the S75 but probably a more accurate speaker.

Never bothered with ambio - I did try it just to see what it was like and was not overly impressed - I prefer stereo!

    Great.

Hey, what wattage would you say that the speakers usually run at? I know it varies greatly with type of music, and consequently how its spiking the speaker, but I was just wondering what 75W will do. Is "normal" listening levels like 5W? 30W? 45W?

Im trying to imaagine a measuring stick as to how potent these speakers will be.

Normal listening is at about 1W. Think about your portable rasio at full volume - that is really quite loud but is unlikely to be more than 1 or 2 watts. The important part of an amplifier is its ability to react to sudden transients and have plenty of power in reserve. Clearly different music uses more power - bass frequencies require more power as the drive units have to move more air.

The speakers are rated as to how much power they can handle, both continuosly and as peak levels. S45s can handle 75W peaks.

I use  a 20 Watts per channel Beolab 1700 amplifier in my study and never needed to   increase the volume as far as half way when I connected a pair of S45-2's to it.

well, the speakers came in. So far so good. They work just fine.

I need to look into recapping, as preventative maintenance anyway.

Ok, so, i officially have Beovirus.

I happened to come across some M-75s which I picked up for 175 US bucks. They will be shipping out next week. So now, I will have a set of S75s and a set of M-75s.

These are running off a BM4000.

However, after reading several things about the BM4400, with all the new stuff they added, the upgraded power output, I found a couple that I bought. The one is very good cosmetically, but doesnt power up according to the owner. The second, works really well, but shows a little wear. So i think im going to pick up both, then use the nice cosmetic parts from one, and transfer it onto the other. Plus ill have hard parts if anything happens to go wrong in the future.

The nice thing is that I am using this machine at work, its a big creative space, so I actually will play it daily, and make use of its power, though not nearly all of its power for sure.

Ok, so I havent told wifey, but for a couple hundred bucks its a great deal.

Do you not think that some of that big creative  space should be filled with a Beovision?  Avants look superb and are gettting quite cheap now......DevilDevilDevilDevil
