    Connection of a Mac mini to a BV8 40": Dolby Digital 5.1?

    Hi everybody,

Forgive me for asking, but it's really not clear to me, despite numerous searches in cyberspace...

Can somebody please tell me whether connecting a Mac mini to a BV8 40" using the Mini DisplayPort output of the Mac to the HDMI output of the BV8 40" (with the adequate adapter):

    - will produce sound, and not only video?

    - if yes, whether this sound will be in eg. Dolby Digital 5.1 format (provided it is in this format originally of course) on a B&O home cinema system?

Basically, what I would like to know is whether the B&O TV will recognize the sound's digital format and treat it accordingly, ie. sending it to the appropriate speakers (front, back, subwoofer, etc), even though it comes from a Mac, and not a DVD or a bluray player...

Many thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts or experience on the matter!

There will be no sound by connecting the Mac Mini display port to the BV8 with the Apple adapter, just because there is no sound output on the Apple display port. You have to connect the digital out of the mini (optical) to the SPDIF in of the BV8 via an optical to coax converter (very small, simple and cheap component).

    Thanks for your answer mbee!

So I guess it means that by going optical to SPDIF, I will get sound, but no digital (Dolby 5.1) though?

You will have digital sound (coax or optical are just two ways to "transport" the digital data).

Yes, it's all digital. 5.1 supported...

Note that the optical to coaxial converter is only an optical switch : it doesn't do any signal conversion or processing. What you have is the same signal, but electricity instead of light... You will not degrade anything.
