Beomaster 2400 volume playing an lp on a Beogram 4004

    Dear all

I wondered if any of you has an answer for this small problem:

When I play my records on my Beogram4004 connected to the Beomaster 2400 (with BeovoxS45)  I can only slightly hear the music out of my speakers with the volume set at maximum.

The radio, in contrary, of  the beomaster 2400 can be heared very well at a normal level of the volume?

Anyone got an idea what the problem might be?

    Thanks in advance!

    Wannes

Re: Beomaster 2400 volume playing an lp on a Beogram 4004

Is the Beogram 4004 connected to the Phono-input on the Beomaster 2400?

Yip the Beogram 4004 is connected to the phono input!

I also tried the tape input, but again the same problem.

To me it sounds like a missing RIAA-amplifier, but I thought it was built-in in the Beomaster 2400.

Have this combination worked perfect together before?

No,  it has always been like that.

If you are getting the same results from the phono and tape sockets it means that your amplifier must be expecting line-level inputs for phono whech is at a higher level than the turntable is producing, which means you need one of these:

    Was the Beomaster 2400 sold without a built-in RIAA-amplifier?

The products section on this site implies that they must have had an RIAA amplifier in the tuntable or the amp as the 2400 and the Beogram 4004 were sold together, but from the description of the problem it does appear that there isn't one.

    Hey

First of all thanks for the quick replies!

I bought the Beomaster from Ebay and the seller 'told' me this was a Beomaster 2400 in it's 'original state'. Either he lied or the RIAA went broken during transport. Is there a way to check if the RIAA is present?

(PS: the beogram connected to another recent amplifier plays normal)

Also if I buy this set, things should be ok?

    Kind regards

Re: Beomaster 2400 volume playing an lp on a Beogram 4004

It seems to me that some kind of modification has happended to the phono-input of the beomaster...

Maybe the RIAA-amplifier is by-passed in some way - if it is possible?

Could be the seller had a record deck with built-in RIAA-amplifier?

The output of beogram 4002 (sister to beogram 4004) is 2 x 0.6 mV, so there isn't a built-in RIAA-amplifier in your record deck...

You can buy the set from Soundsheavenly.

The seller is Steve at Sound Heavenly who is the seller on the link at the bottom of this page and is a great guy to deal with. He is active on this forum as Steve at Sounds Heavenly, so you may wish to send him a personal message but he will probably read and  reply to this thread in due course.

My only worry would be whether the RIAA pre-amp is missing or there is a more fundamental problem. Have you tried playing a normal CD player/cassette deck /iPod through the phono socket on the 2400? (You may need to buy a lead to do this) If it sounds OK then the kit will probably work.

Re: Beomaster 2400 volume playing an lp on a Beogram 4004

I don't think the RIAA preamp was an option on the 2400, already in the predecessor 1900 it was always there, integrated with the rest of the preamplifier on the same PCB. So it can't be missing - either it has been disabled (perhaps some previous owner had a turntable with internal RIAA, as mentioned before), or it is broken.

One more test: when you connect the turntable to the tape input, does it sound exactly the same as in phono? Same volume, same balance between bass and treble, no distortion? If yes, then an external preamp should do the trick. Of course you could connect it to the tape input if you don't need it for anything else.

It should be possible to reverse the probable modification, though. If it has been made sensibly, it can't be more than cutting/replacing a couple of jumper wires, but you never know...

    Hi,

This does sound as though there is a problem with the Beomaster.  The RIAA pre-amp was an integral part of the 2400, so the only options would really be either repairing it or plugging the Beogram into the Tape input using an external RIAA pre-amp (such as the one linked to above) Whistle

    Best regards,

    Steve.

A number of 2400s have been modified to remove the RIAA to allow an extra line level input - useful for CD players etc. It probably has the RIAA in it but taken out of the circuit.
