My name is Cleve and I'm an addict

My partner says I have an addiction.  Rubbish.  I'd like to tell you my story and you will all agree it's perfectly normal behaviour.  I'm sure it is, really sure.  Isn't it?

I was a contented music lover, regularly listening to my Beosystem 2500 and occasionally, my Beosystem 10 in the garden, and once in a while watching my Beovision LX5500 or my MX1500, all of which I have owned without any need for anything else since I bought them in 1991.  I was happy and contented with my lot.  You all recognise this, I'm sure.

One day in July 2008 I ventured onto a website called Beoworld which I came across by chance and another site called Beocentral.  I thought they were vaguely interesting and reminded me of some of the B&O kit I had owned over the years.  I occasionally looked at the sites but only just once in a while, nothing serious and life went on much as before.

Then I read the Jarman brother's book and suddenly it had crept up on me and I just had to try one piece of vinatge B&O, just to see what all the fuss was about.  Just a little bit, you know, nothing serious.

First, in March 2009 a very cheap, sort of a 'loss-leader' fix if you like – a Beocenter 4000 (the 70s one that has a fantastic amplifier and a baby Beocord 5000) and a pair of Beovox S45.2s.  A real buzz, but I'm still in control here, no sweat.  Just another little fix, just to keep up the pleasure level.  A CDX, wow, that's terrific. Very cool and mellow now.  Let's try something a bit more radical, a bit hardline - like a turntable.

A BG 1700 (No records yet, but, they come along, slowly at first but then in big mad rush.

Very chilled now, but I need a big buzz, a really big fix.  A BG 4004, a late BM 2400 ( 2400.2 really), a Beocord 5000 from the 70s (that’s two cassette players that will probably eat my favourite tapes now, but really cool and beautiful) and another pair of S45.2s, this time in Rosewood to match the other kit.

The buzz lasts for at least two weeks.  A little top-up is needed, just to maintain the high - a pair of CX100s.  But this didn't last long - only a day or so.   Need a real quality fix now, some real class stuff.  A BM4400, courtesy of a well known generous Doctor in the North East is prescribed and that seems to have done the trick - at least for the moment.

I can give it up at any time, of course I can.  Easy.  But perhaps I need just a little somthing from Mr Jensen's last period - a Beocenter 9500.  Then I'll stop, really I will.  But perhaps I need a pair of actives to go with the 9500, just to round off the high, like a pair of BL 4000s or maybe 8000s   I’ll stop then.  Honestly, I will.....easy, really easy, no problems..... no sweat....piece of cake.

    Help me!

    Cleve

Mmm - wait until you get into the territory of replacing perfectly serviceable AV components with B&O items just because you want to own a B&O version of that particular item. I just replaced a nice 80Gb iPod with a six year old Beosound 2 with a 128 Mb SD card the other day.

    Why? Because!

    Hi Cleve.
Thanks for your story, perhaps you could tag it as 'My B&O' and we can revive that thread.

Thats the insanity of it all.

I have replaced two working stereo systems a Yamaha and an Aiwa respectively.

I started looking at B&O on Ebay about a year ago. Just window shopping. Feeling the need to know more about what it was I was looking at I soon discovered both Beoworld and Beocentral.

Won my fist "kit" on Ebay on January 23rd 2009 which consisted of a Beomaster 3000 Beogram 3000 and a Beogram CD-X. Shortly afterwards added a pair of RL 60's then  a BM 4500, another pair of RL 60's, Then a BM 2400, then another BM 3000 and BM3300. Subsequntly a Beogram 3300 CD a second Beogram 3000 two pairs of Beovox CX-100's another Beomaster 2400 and just this week another Beomaster 2400.

But what I really covet but cant seem to find here in the USA is a decent BM 1700 and a BM 2000 70's version.

Oh well I cant have everything.

Didnt have any vinyl either to speak of so I had to go out and get a bunch and I did. Mostly swing jazz and folk music from the 50's and early 60's.

My Beosytem 3000 was a real gem. Cometically very clean. The turnable had a locked up solenoid which I repaired and a wasted stylus so I took the cartrigde off the second one I purchased for parts. Need a spare turntable just in case.

The second Beomaster 2400 I consider an absolute gift. It is as close to flawless as you could ask for a 30 year old piece of equipment. I still cant believe I own it.

My friends all say I have lost my mind. I have converted and entire room of my house into a workshop storage space for all this stuff. I also have purchased a handful of MCL kits AMCL 82 and a MCL30.

    I'm an addict too.Big Smile

After a bout of expenditure after graduating the pressures and priorities of family life meant that I managed to have a 30 year period of enjoying that original fix of BM1200 BG1203 BV2600. Then as retirement  approached I indulged in a new 32 Avant and more recently a second life but hardly used BC1. Then a new-old Beotalk 1200 came along, not to mention the Serene. Found it a bit strange that I knew far more about the various comings and goings of former dealers and franchises in my area than the current dealership.

I'm now thinking about getting those failed lights sorted out on the BM1200.Idea Diffficult to justify anything else yet in the way of active speakers or LCD TV because the Avant really is so good for both sound and vision. But tempted to look again at some of the vintage equipment I had to ignore all those years ago!

(And I've got a loft full of old Teac/ Technics  etc CD players, VCRs etc that were so important to the kids when they were teenagers (and with which I don't want to insult my B&O set-ups!))

Re: My name is Cleve and I'm an addict

There are quite a few of us about!

My earliest B&O memries are my fathers system from the 1970's (BM1100 Beovox s30's and Beogram 1100) which he bought when I was 12 and it provided much of the soundtrack to my teenage years.

Fast forward to Christmas 1996. The rest of my fathers B&O is long gone but he still listens to the S30's on a daily basis and I realise that they sound way better than my modern speakers. A quick look on eBay and a few days later a pair of S30's arrive for £15, including postage. My system doesn't t sound quite as good as his though, maybe I need a Beomaster or a Beocenter........

    I have since acquired:

    Beovox S45-2 (x2)

    CX100 (x 2)

    CX50

    C40

    Beolab 1700

    Beomaster 1700

    Beocentre 2000 (now gone)

    Beocenter 5000 (now gone)

    Beocenter 7000 (now gone)

    Beosystem 5000

    Beocom 2

    Beocom 4

Beocom 6000 (x2) All the phones are from when I won first prize in the Beoworld prize draw!

    Beovision LX2502

    Beovision LX6000

    Beovision LS5500

Beovision LX5500 From King Street last christmas

    Beovsion MX2000

    Beogram 1902

    Beogram 1100

    Beocord V8000

    Beocord 1900

But I am not addicted and I can stop anytime I want.......Whistle

Would it be appropriate for we Beoworlders to have our own '12 step programme' (similar to AAs) to help with this?

Simon, at least you have passed a few pieces on - I haven't got to that stage yet!  And in my original post, i didn't include the Beocom or the 4 pairs of headphones!

My partner is now insisting that if I acquire any more it's on a 'one piece in, one piece out' basis.   This isn't too tricky a stipulation as the next bit is going to be a BC 9500.  Three sources all in one piece ..... ha ha hah.  I can pass on one pair of headphones for that.

Re: My name is Cleve and I'm an addict

MS150s are excellent - at very high volumes, I find the tweeters shriek a little but I dare say that is as much the amplifier as the speaker. I had them restored some time ago and the restorer was extremely impressed with them - very flat frequency response (he tested them as he was a manufacturer of THX cinema equipment) and very good low bass response. I actually prefer M100s but probably because they are more coloured in sound! The external finish of the M100s is also far better.
