Re: Guess where we have been!
By "have it" do you mean the beolab 5000 or the beogram 3000, I thought you had every bit of B&O already.

Re: Guess where we have been!
Excellent, and well worth the wait! Peter, tell me about the white, hardback book "Beolab 5000- Classic Audio" Is this a book Frede has written and is for sale, or is it pertaining to your Beolab 5000 only (work done, output graphs etc)

Re: Guess where we have been!
There are two books - the large one is the normal manual every Classic Audio product comes with. This is a 79 page loose leaf folder prepared by Frede and Kirsten and contains test certificates and copies of the user manuals as well as the schematics. The little hardback book is something that Frede has been working on and I am fortunate to be the first to get one. It is a book containing a number of user manuals and catalogue pages as well as the test certificate for my own products. A very special present from Frede.
I picked up the Beogram 3000 with 12" arm from Frede as well as the Beolab and Beomaster 5000 which he has restored. I also have some Beovox 2500 cubes and a Beomaster 4401 - one of only two we know about and a pre-production model (Also supplied with full Classic Audio manuals!). These were supposed to be my old pieces restored but unfortunately, whilst at Bellac, they had been stored in a wet cellar for some reason, and the originals were rendered no more than scrap. Frede replaced them with ones of his own, something that is typical of his immense generosity. He also has fitted them with the most splendid rosewood trim and mine are the first with the new etched fronts that will never wear.
The sound from this system is wonderful - Frede demonstrated his own system whilst we enjoyed his hospitality - and anyone who either owns a Beolab 5000 system or aspires to one should really talk to Frede. Mine looks better than new and sounds fantastic. The attention to detail is incredible - the cartridge dfitted to the ST/P arm is an SP1/2 which normally has a spherical diamond. Frede had this changed to an elliptical stylus which Axel managed to fit in record time.
My trip to Venø was one of the highlights of this year and one I hope to do again in the not too distant future. The Aston Martin was fun but it pales compared to my time with Frede.

Sounds like a great trip with great results Peter. Noting your reference to Aston Martin, was this a pre or post B&O sound system model? I think that there was something reported in the press last week about AM getting Toyota to badge a very small car for them. Not clear whether this was to go on general sale or to be given out with each real AM purchase. (All to do with playing around with average emission figures no doubt!)
Getting back to B&O what vintage equipment gives you the most pleasure (if not already the subject of this thread!)

Re: Guess where we have been!
It was a new DBS used as a demo model for B&O - see the news article.
Difficult to say what i like the most, but the Beolab 5000 system is certainly up there. Will be firing up the Beomaster 4401 and M100s tomorrow though!

Shame I am no longer able to just pop over and listen to your Beolab 5000. Maybe next time I am in Newcastle though.

Re: Guess where we have been!
1. W did go in the Prius - went very well right up to the point when someone drove into the back of me at speed near Harrogate. Carried on but the impact broke the sat nav so difficult to say it would have found Frede. Averaged over 50 mpg - even with Lee driving - I think he rather liked it!
2. Hotel California!
3. Yes - and we found a catalogue with them in.

Re: Guess where we have been!
Very nice Peter, I really must get round to sending my BM1000 over to Frede. Been on my list of things to do for about 2 years now.

Re: Guess where we have been!
Hi Peter
Do you know if Frede restores other systems / turntables? I have been looking for a mint Beogram 4000 for about a year tgo start a vintage system. Any thoughts?

Re: Guess where we have been!
Frede specialises in the restoration of the Beolab 5000 system but does do other items as well. He does do restorations to the highest standard and clearly the cost will reflect this. I suggest you contact him via his site. Martin Olsen is also highly skilled in restoration work and will be someone else to consider.
The 4000 is the most complex of these decks - my favourite - but is the most likely to go wrong! The 4002 is simpler internally but the performance is very similar! Just a thought! What do you plan to use it with? B&O systems are designed as systems and you will get the best performance by putting together a complete system rather than mixing and matching. The ultimate system would be a Beogram 4000 (or 4002), Beomaster 4400 and Beovox M100s. The cassette player is problematic as the Beocord 5000 Type 4715, although a wonderful design, is simply too complex and will find new and amusing ways of wrecking your tape collection. A Beocord 2200 is a very good alternative but does not match. The alternative would be an 8000 series deck but this is obviously a completely different design.
For CDs, a CDX is the obvious choice or use a high end model hidden elsewhere.
