Hello Everyone,

I accidently tired cleaning the platter on my Beogram 8000 with alcohol and it removed the finish. Has anyone removed the black plastic ribs that are on the platter before or can they be removed so one could repaint the platter with a clear coat?

I haven't been able to find a source for a second hand platter which would have been an alternative.

Bad luck! I would suggest a new platter is definitely the way forward though. I do not think that you will be happy with the result of removing and replacing the ribs. Look for a broken 8000 or even a 8002. A 6002 should work as well but both this and the 8002 will need to be levelled.

Good hearing from you again. Curious about what you meant by levelling a 6002 or 8002? Are the platters thicker?

They are thinner - the ribs are not so raised - an 8000 platter would be best but may be tricky to find. Some US enthusiasts actually used a glass platter with the radial marking made from strips of black tape. The one I have seen was mirrored and had a record clamp fitted!

And to others who are tempted to experiment with platter cleaning - DONT !
Even water will remove the silky coating and it's impossible for us mortals to recreate.
A soft dry cloth is all it will accept.
