Beogram 3000 Type 5228 speed problem

    Hi Everyone,

My Beogram 3000 Type 5228 has some issues spinning at 45 rpm.  If I turn the control to 7 or 10 , the tonearm moves to the proper place, but the platter still spins at 33 1/3 rpm.  Manual control also doesn't seem to work at all.  Setting it to 12 and pressing start works fine and everything is as one would expect.  I have taken the sub platter off to look around, nothing seems to be broken (although that is based on just a quick glance).  Any ideas on what I can check?  Any and all suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks!

    -Phil

Hi Phil, and welcome to Beoworld !   Yes - thumbs up

Your Beogram will need cleaning and lubrication to the speed change mech.

    Hi Martin,

Thanks for the welcome and the info!  Is this something that I can do myself, or should I take it to a repair shop?  I have no problem taking things apart, I just never gone past taking off the sub-platter on this turntable before.  Based on what I saw then, I would guess I need to access the speed change mechanism from the bottom of the unit.  Would you recommend any specific cleaner or lubricant?  I have hear good things about deoxit, but don't know if it would be a fit here.

    Thanks again!

Yes, you will need to go in from below.

Deoxit is not something I would recommend. Like WD40 and other 3-1 products, it's probably very good for something but
not a thing I would like inside any B&O. Contact cleaner is good for cleaning contacts but only if you can clean it all off afterwards.
Contact cleaner does not remove anything, it will only shift the dirt around and in the best cases it won't add to the mess.

You need to clean off the remains of the hardened lubricants and add fresh.
Acid-free oil will do fine, sewing-machine oil or so. Not motor oil or "everyman oil", it will evaporate too quickly.

Whether you can do the service yourself is for you to decide.
The service manual is online and download'able for silver & gold members though it does not provide much info regarding actual service.

    Martin
