    Isn't it time for a new Beo4?

Now that BeoSound 5 is out, there is finally a real home digital music player in the B&O range, with BeoPort playing the "hardware only, no design to show" role in the audio range.

Yet, on both systems, it is still impossible to have direct access to the sources on the Beo4: the hard keys RADIO and AMEM are useless when having no conventional BeoSound, CD works on BeoPort but not BeoSound 5, so don't you think it's time for B&O to release, either a new Beo4 with hard keys showing "NRADIO" instead of "RADIO", "PC" instead of "CD", and "NMUSIC" instead of "AMEM"?B&O already made different Beo4 types for hotels, why not offering a new one for digital sources?

Or maybe people would be happy if a simple software update in BeoSound 5 made the product react to different keys when used as audio master: then you could keep your Beo4, and select NRADIO and NMUSIC via RADIO and AMEM, which mean almost the same anyway. Then pressing CD would activate PC CD in BeoPort, and since the PC source can be activated by another hard key already, we would still move ahead..

    What do you think?

No, not at all. I have a very modern B&O system - with my BS5 arriving today - but I'll always still require the RADIO and CD buttons. Indeed, they are used more than anything apart from V.MEM, which controls my TV.

Think about this: B&O is mainly aimed at traditionalists. Most people who use and buy B&O have old equipment and are still far more likely to buy a CD player than a BS5! Why on earth would PC replace CD when 95% of B&O users still use and plan to use CD players?

i Think this would be the best solution. You could control your BS5 in RADIO and A.MEM mode, PC in TV mode You could even control the BS5 with your BL1000, 5000, 7000 and you don`t need different remotes for different rooms. Beo has already done this in the new BV7-40 MKIV. You can disable the TV tuner and DVB HD in the tuner setup menu. when disabled, the source (TV) will appear in the con.nections menu, so you can assign it to any external source. This was on the wishlist of many people here in the forum.....

I think A.MEM & V.MEM could live on happily under LIST and LIGHT has really gone the way of the dodo with our increased support of different lighting solutions in the Beo 5.

There is talk of making the BeoSound 5 react to RADIO, but I can't imagine that this is any simpler than issuing an updated Beo 4 as has already happened several times.

I think they should allow exchangable button caps (with the necessary code below). I'd love to have direct access to TV, DVD, FORMAT, STAND, SOUND and CLOCK right there at the top.

The reassigning thing is the obvious programming change, but I think I asked this ages back and was told the buttons are hard-wired.  As an example, I'd love the DVD button reassigned to the AUX function because when I watch a film, it's through my Mac Mini so I need to switch the BeoMaster to the auxiliary input.

Re: Isn't it time for a new Beo4?

The s/w update scheduled for this Summer (read: later this year Smile) will make it possible for the user to let the N.RADIO of the BS5 respond to the RADIO-button on the Beo4.

Before the Beo5 was launched we were aware of the fact that the Beo4 was about to be discontinued, and replaced by a simpler remote. But quite a few thought that dropping the Beo4 was a bad idea now. So anyone with any info on this: please post!

I believe that is pretty much what the Beo5 is supposed to be Wink

Regarding updating previous remotes, I think I personally have enough nuisance with the various Beolink 1000 & Beo4 versions and the buttons jumping around as it is now. But by all means make the "host" equipment itself be configurable, i.e the "CD" button doing different things depending on whether you have a real CD player or something living in a computer.

Re: Isn't it time for a new Beo4?

Indeed a software update in either the Beo4 or the audio master would be the best solution, both already have been implemented :

    - in Beo4, you can select "BS9000" or "basic" setups for the audio master, that changes the way the coloured keys and < and > work, with BS9000 it will skip to next CD, with other BeoSounds it will cue or rewind the CD track;

    - in the latest BV7 and BV8-40 indeed, you can re-assign the video sources and turn on the PC or DTV by pressing TV.

Maybe the latter updating solution would be faster to implement, especially since BeoSound 5 is supposed to receive all updates automatically through Internet, so you wouldn't have to replace your whole equiment..

Just to clarify.  Is this something that has been just added in the last update?  If so could this possibly fix the issue for some BS3 based units (North America in particular) where the built-in tuner seems hardwired for the DTV button only?

    Micheal,

If you want to use the built-in ATSC tuner, it is assigned automatically as DTV, but if you don't use the tuner, you can disable it and free up the DTV address to be assigned to other inputs.

Re: Isn't it time for a new Beo4?

Thanks Trip.  Unfortunately, I do want to use the built-in tuner but I've always wished I could switch it to TV from DTV as this makes the most sense in my setup.

Just wanted to make sure there wasn't a change in the new software that might allow for that.

I have the same issue with my BV7-32, the built-in DVB-T makes the DTV key busy, although we don't have DVB-T in Reunion yet!I wish I could use the key to turn on the TVIX player..Hmm

You can!  That's what Trip was referring to.  It's done in the service menu by disabling the tuner although you'll probably want to check with someone else for the specifics.
