Project: Refoaming ABR on RL60 speakers. Details and pics inside.

Thanks to the helpful posts I found here, I undertook the project of refoaming the auxillary base radiators (ABR) on my newly Craigslist acquired RL60 speakers.

The entire project went pretty smoothly and I documtend and wrote up the entire process on my blog.

See the full process and pictures here.

They sound much, much better now than before, and also much better than the other speaker which has yet to undergo the treatment.  I found some carpet underlay at Home Depot which I think was a pretty good replacement for the original foam, but I think I'll always be on the lookout for something better.  Anyone have any ideas?

Anyway, comments much appreciated here, or on the blog and thanks for the valuable resource this community is!

Well done! What a great project and a big thanks for all the excellent photos and the explanation of the work.
Although I don’t think mine need doing (but they are 20 years old!), it may now give me the courage to open them up and possibly do mine!
    Thanks again.

    Smile

    Thanks for this Frank.
Great photo's and easy too follow thread. Much appreciated!
I notice you managed to get the curly red/black speaker cables with them. Lucky you, not easy to come by now.

Just one point before I contemplate tackling this. I haven't noticed any audible problems also when I shake the speakers I can't here anything loose, so by that do I assume all is OK? They are 'old' and from what I've read, foam rot is inevitable at this age.

    Or isn't it?

    Hi Kokomo,

Some versions of the RL60 speakers had a different design that did not have this issue.

The RL60.2 speakers use a plastic bass port (if I'm not mistaken) and wouldn't require this procedure.

That, or, maybe a previous owner already repaired them for you?

Thanks for that. I'm the original owner, so I know for certain nothing's ever been done. Better perhaps to leave well alone!

    Thanks again.

If they are RL60.2's they definitely don't have ABR's and so don't suffer this problem.

     I'm impressed well done. :D

Are these impressive speakers when it comes to performance?
