Daniel was referring to analogue cordless phones - they are now not approved for use in some EU countries for a few reasons:
firstly the signal is broadcast without encryption, so anyone with a basic radio scanner can listen in to your conversation (I used to have lots of fun doing this as a student..)
secondly because there are concerns that the higher transmission wattage will fry your brain
thirdly the frequencies have now been allocated for other uses.
and also because it will mean that manufacturers can sell more new phones....
Having said that, I doubt anyone will know or care if you use it, so enjoy
