Re: A Beocord steel wire recorder went for £ 400!

During the last 15 minutes it was bid up to £600, and it is by the way not working.

    I'm not at all surprised.
I think it could fetch even more on eBay.
I doubt if there are any BeoWorlders who wouldn't mind owning this rare piece of Beocord history.

    Poor me, never win owt!

Congratulations Martin, it looks in very very nice condition. I sent a mail to Lee that perhaps he could use the pictures taken by Laurits.com on the Products page of the 84U (http://beoworld.org/prod_details.asp?pid=1107). Happy to hear that it is to be restored to working condition.

Are all wire-recorders this sought after? My father got one (non-B&O) in the basement, I don't know if it is working.

    Best regards

Those would do great in the Products page of the 84U, and pictures of the internals and the resturation would indeed be very interesting!

Re: A Beocord steel wire recorder went for £ 400!

Yes, it seems to be in a wonderful condition.
Personally I am not very fond of this auction house, partly (but not only) because of their heavy buying
fees (20% + closing fee!) but never had the opportunity to buy one of these lovely machines before and
always wanting one I considered this one was for me.
The Beocord will be in my hands, hopefully, next week as I have arranged a personal
pickup in northern Jutland rather than having it shipped. Can't bear the thought of
    a transport damage...
A photo thread... that's a good idea and this Beocord would be a good choice for one, but it will have
to wait in line behind several other projects.
I will also need to find a service manual or at least the schematics or a service sheet. Anyone ?  Geeked

BTW; Did you know that an even rarer version of this Beocord exists ?
The Beocord 84UG, the G stands for "Gengiver" (sound reproducer) was a playback
    only version.
(The record/playback switch on the front chooses between internal/external
    speakers instead).
I found one only about a year ago, quite a basketcase but definitely restorable.
It's now with my good friend, fellow collector and restorer Roland in Germany
awaiting restoration, a.o. a new cabinet will have to be made since most of the original
    is missing.
    Enjoy this:

Being a fly on the wall while you  explained to SWMBO why you needed a wire recorder  would be fun though!

Ah yes, need.  It's interesting the differences in that one, and how the "because it is interesting and looks nice" argument seems quite one way.

For example, I don't need to have a Beoxxx, but that doesn't apply to some ghastly ornament in the kitchen, or watching Disparate Fishwives...

I'm still sometimes at a loss to myself as to why women are worth all the trouble?Unsure

Re: A Beocord steel wire recorder went for £ 400!

Thanks guys, I will definitely consider doing a resto-thread on this one, mainly because you asked for one but
also because this is considered one of the rarer classic pieces and I am very much looking forward to working on it.

I got the Beocord home now and it looks just as beautiful in real life as in the photos.
I also managed to lay my hands on a copy of the schematics (thanks Alex, though I am almost sure he is not a Beoworld'er) so all
I need now is time. Maybe during fall or winter...

The Lauritz photos are copyrighted, I believe, but I will make some photos for Beoworld to include in the product pages.

For those of you interested: another one appeared on eBay Germany (no, this is not my auction - just wanted to share it): http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290340292840

It looks a bit different to the one discussed here, but the seller claims its a steel wire recorder.

Lets see for how much this one gets sold...

Re: A Beocord steel wire recorder went for £ 400!

    Great find !

    A wire-recorder indeed.
This one was obviously cut out from a Grand Prix 413CH (1949 floor-standing Radio-Gram-Recorder) but
interesting none-the-less. The Grand Prix 413CH was very large and top of the line at
the time. It had two large woofers and a built-in cellhorn tweeter, quite impressive and it could record too !

This deck will also play 78RPM records in that the left (take-up) reel also functions as the platter. The same
deck was also available as a separate.

I noticed several service labels from Freddy Hansen on the island of Amager, which is only about 30Km from where I live so it
has spent a great deal of its life in Denmark.
I also noticed it is currently set for 220V DC rather than AC. Hopefully the new owner will notice this.
