    Beogram 5005 help

Hello, i am new to the world of B&O but look forward to emracing this whole owners community.

I was curious if i could use your wealth of expereince to help me get the best out of my setup.

I have just picked up a Beogram 5005 in fair condition, with a MMC1 cartridge. It arrived in the post without being locked, so the platter had been rattling about and maybe knocked the cartridge a few times.

I am using this turntable with my Rotel amp, and eltax speakers, which i got a compatible cable from Steve at Soundheaven.co.uk.

I was told that i wouldnt need to put an earth into place as the 7 pin cable had it included.

Finally i got the chance to hear how it sounded.

T o be honest, although the clarity was there, it lacked a little brightness and punch. I thought maybe the cartridge was a little worn? would this do this? then, perhaps its my amps phono preamp, but i have never had issues with it before.

Finally i have just noticed that with headphones on, i can hear a crackling sound when the turntable is not playing. Again i am thinking this could be an earthing issue? any ideas?

It would be great to hear any advice any of you may have.

Oh also, any idea if i can jump to a track? if so, how?

Thanks for having me in your community,

    Tom

    Re: Beogram 5005 help

It could be the cartridge - the MMC1 is one of the best made by B&O but will be getting old and the suspension hardens - having compared an old MMC2 and one that has been refurbished, one can notice the difference. You should not need an earth as Steve has I am sure dealt with this. If a DIN to RCA connector, there will be an eath cable to attach to the earth of the amplifier which will take the chassis earth from the casing of the DIN . The crackling does sound like an earth though - run an extra wire from the chassis to the earth and see if it disappears.

There is no track recognition on the Beogram - if attached to a Beomaster, one does have the ability to advance and reverse the arm by remote control but this facility will be lost to you as you are not using the Datalink connections.

The 5005 is a deck I owned for a short time. I had a 5000 system from new and replaced the original Beogram 5000 with the 5005. To be honest, the 5005 is more convenient because of the remote ability but the 5000 in my view sounded better! Also better built. It does look good though and is very resistant to external shocks or noise.

    Welcome to Beoworld.
