Neither! They are exactly the same but a different shape! You really want a Beogram 6500, 7000 or a 4500 with a fitted RIAA. Or be different and get a Beogram 6000 quad!

Beogram 6000, interesting. I have located a very nice BG 6000, original mmc6000. If it is used in cd4 off, can it be conected directly to a 3200, or anything else new, since it sends line level signals? Can soundsmith smmc20 series be used if you do not want quad performance?

Yes. You would switch off the CD4 circuit anyway. My 4001 is actually a 6000 really though I have now removed the CD4 and RIAA board as it is not needed. You can just use the RIAA and it performs very well. Any MMC20 cartridge will do - Axel will put new suspension and a stylus on for a very good price.

If you want a nice 5005 (great deck, smashing stuff) - I have one for sale ;)

I used a Beogram 6000 with my Beosystem 6500 for a long time before I found a matching BG6500, and I was very happy with it (still am, it is connected to tape 2 now... ).

There's a switch for turning the CD4 decoder off, but it isn't really needed since the decoder will play in regular stereo anyway when it cannot detect the CD4 carrier from the record. The extra two output lines don't matter either, you can plug it into any input socket that accepts line level signals.

The original MC6000 is likely to have seen its best days. The BG6000 itself is quite old as well though, and may need attention or service sooner than the modern alternatives.

Agree, though it is interesting that some stereo records do trigger the CD4 circuit. The CD4 circuit also limits the frequency response to 15kHz so passing bats will be disappointed!!
