    Hello from Ireland

    Hi,

Liam from Ireland here, just popping in to introduce myself. I've come into posession of 4x Beovox CX100 drivers, but just the drivers themselves...no enclosure.

I'm curious - I presume the enclosure itself isn't available as a spare part?! No matter how much scouring of the internet...nothing has turned up anything usable!

    Regards,

    L

    Hello Liam

    Welcome to BeoWorld!

I have to agree.  Expect to pay somewhere around £50-£75 for CX100s that need new drivers.  A bit more if the casings/frets are in really good condition, a bit less if they look rough (but being aluminium they can be sanded down and polished/painted and the results can be very good indeed).

The CXs are much better than I thought they were going to be, and have a sound that belies their dimensions - I'm not entirely sure how so much bass can come from such a small enclosure without sounding all farty and naff.... Unsure Being small and quite pretty they are fairly SWMBO-friendly too Yes - thumbs up

Super clean and tidy CX100s with new drive units will go for £200 ish on the right day on eBay, and as I understand it, new drivers are around the £25 mark each from your B&O dealer, so that should give you some idea about how much to spend on them.

Be warned though, we all started off with just one item of B&O, and look at us now ! Embarrassed

Amen to that Ray - I agree with all that has been posted re:- these drivers & the CX speakers in general. Very good wife approval factors and surprisingly good for their size.

    Welcome to beoworld.

Oh - nearly forgot, you would need the crossovers & backplates as well to make complete speakers so a used pair in need of new drivers is easily your best way forward.

    Chris.

Absolutely, I'll be looking for chassis with dud drivers. Anyone know the internals of the CX100, ie. what they look like? one sealed enclosure? Wouldn't worry about x-overs, I'm just about to sit my finals in Electronics Engineering...will cook up something in the coming weeks :D

    Re: Hello from Ireland

Hi Liam, you can also search on ebay for C 75 speakers as well, they are the same shape and size as the CX 100's

I know someone who re-built a pair of CX 100's but replaced the B&O crossover with a

    Linkwitz-Riley Electronic Crossover (LREC)

    http://sound.westhost.com/project09.htm

and they sound better than my B&O  Redline 60.2 speakers  !

If you are pretty good on the electronics side of things, it might be a better challenge to design the LREC into your project, rather than knocking up a simple crossover based on an old B&O design.

Good luck anyway, it is a worthwhile project either way you decide  :-)

    I'll be watching with interest.

Well, chaps, thanks for making me feel so welcome! It's nice to not have a snooty forum as so many are :(!

I also feel a 'super dooper CX' thread coming on. Even if the enclosures aren't B&O, and the tweeters are Visaton...it'll be interesting!

I saw (thanks Overture!!) that the drivers have certain Vas (airspace) requirements, I'll try and prise the Thiele-Small out of B&O this week,

    Re: Hello from Ireland

Liam - if you do go ahead with this would you post the thread in the "workbench" section as this is where it would be of most benefit & easiest to find in future. The general forum tends to get tons of traffic where threads of this nature soon get buried in the annals.

Oh and don't forget to post photo's - we LIKE photo'sBig Smile

    Good luck,

    Chris.

you won't find any direct references to B&O drivers in the database Liam, because B&O normally buy in the drivers from Peerless, vifa, SEAS, Foster, Nokia and a few others I guess

i wonder what drivers they are? Surely someone in Denmark will have records... Peerless, Seas etc have been well regarded in the homebrew world since granny fell off the bus.

you may get lucky and someone on Beoworld will tell you who made the CX100 drivers for B&O

    Re: Hello from Ireland

Well this is the best I could do:

Admittedly that's a CX50 not a CX100, but the drivers are the same.  It doesn't say much other than the B&O part number I'm afraid....

As an aside, a mad quiz would be:  there are 3 B&O items in that picture, and one "related".  Can anyone name them? (shouldn't be that difficult...)

    The table/floor/radiator don't count!

The CX itself, a Beotalk and the back of some sort of BeoSystem?

I've dropped a mail to B&O, standing by if they can make some further light on the subject

    Re: Hello from Ireland

I'm feeling for you with that attempt, but only the CX is right....

Although you can see the back of a Beo______ it's  not a system...

It's a stinker, that's for sure...  don't hold it against me anyone!  Unsure

    Japanese or otherwise...they have Thiele-Small parameters...and I want them!! :D

Worst case, I'll be measuring them when I refoam

Seems a really good way (shimming the VC so it doesn't move!)

I'll publish the T/S when I've measured them

    Re: Hello from Ireland

Yes, I tend to do that. Otherwise the VC rubs on the polepiece and your unit sounds terrible and eventually dies... Sad

Sometimes I cheat and do it without, and just feel my way, but that is a much better way to do it.

    Gents,

I have it. In my typical undying relentlessness to find the answer...I called Denmark. Useless.

I then called SEAS in the US - apparently a manufacturer of B&Os drivers. Turned out the gent on the phone worked previously for B&O, and knew exactly what I was after...a company called Foster Electric. So,  the only three people on the planet who knew what drivers they were : B&O's designers, the chap at SEAS, and me.

It is with that, in the true spirit of Open Source (I write this from Linux Mint)....

    LO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Note the 1. ginormous magnet, 2. Tiny vent hole.... I think we have our man.

And are those T/S I see?!

The only things keeping me from saying those are the ones, are

    • glass fiber cone (paper on my CX50's)
    • curved sides (straight on CX50)

But this could well be a good lead...

Valid point - Foster and Fostex are essentially the same company and confirmed suppliers of B&O's drivers...that's a good thing!

Although it will require some digging, I believe I'm onto something! I'll be measuring the exact thiele-small over the next few days though
