[BV5] Does B&O overrule the panasonic settings?
Dear fellowmembers,
I've recently purchased a BV5 mkIII from 2005.
I've replaced both frame and cloth by another colour and discovered the buttons on left side below the screen.
As I couldn't resist pressing them, I saw the original panasonic menu's.
There are a lot of settings you can change!
But the question is, if I do change the settings, will B&O overrule these through the RS232 port?
Or, if I accidently change them, will B&O set them again to there own original settings?
Does anyone know this?
Thanks in advance.
Beobuddy.

I have a BV5 connected to a Beosystem 3 and the changes in the Panasonic are overwritten by the BS3. According to me, most of the Panasonic settings you wil find in the BS3 menu, I don't know about an original BV5 which is in fact a BS2.

Hi Beogen

Thanks

Re: [BV5] Does B&O overrule the panasonic settings?
This morning I tried to find out.
The pana panel has some presets for video, like "cinema", "normal" and "dynamic".
So I changed the originale setting from "cinema" to "dynamic". These settings has their own settings like colour, contrast, sharpness etc.
After the change I put the tv in standby and waited for about 20 seconds.
Then I pressed "TV" and it took a several extra seconds to turn on the panel.
And again after accessing the pana menu, it says "cinema". So the orignal settings were restored!
So, I went a little further.
I changed some settings within the preset, like colour, contrast .
And again the changed video settings were set back to the original values.
I've tried changing also some sound settings, but those are not set back. Probably the sound options aren't used at all. (logically).
As I know that all the panels (as I'm told by the seller of profi panels) has the same RS232 instructions, I'm beginning to doubt that B&O puts their own software in the pana panels.
So, that would mean that you can change an older panel without any problems with a newer version.
Could someone confirm this?

Hi Leon and Dave,
Yes, I changed the colour to Light Blue, one of the newer colours.
And indeed it is the same colour as the Avant RF DVD 32 with HDR inside I'm selling right now
It's rather easy to change, the frame is just one part and the same for the cloth.
Both changed and the BV5 looks as new

That is a very impressively layed out room!! The third time i've seen a BV5 used with pentas too! I'd personally find a pair of the sky blue BL1's to go with that :)
Your room is incredibly natural, and i'm assuming it has a very comfortable feel to it. At first i didn't even see the pentas, well done!

But I can't see the pictures :(
What year/type was the BV5 before the makeover :)
Did you use a newer Panasonic plasma panel for the HD BV5?
I have a BV5 in mind that I want to buy from UK, yesterday I also got the chance to buy one from DK, a MKIII BV5 sn: 188xxxxx unpacked/repacked from B&O with 2 year guarantee from the day the package will be opened, but the price is £6800 his first price was £6700, and he have no idea about how many hours the set have been used, but it could be a bargain that was worth thinking about
Thanks

@Hebo
I used to post them directly to the forum but it seems they are no longer on the server. I can always send them to a private mail if you want. Don't expect great quality.
@Anders
It wasn't a makeover. I started from scratch by ordering all necessary spare parts and a broken Avant. Then I bought the BS3 and made the center speaker power supply.
I chose the Panasonic TH-42PS9EK but a generation 8 or 10 also does the job.

Hi mate, thanks for your mail and pictures
I couldn't wait any more, so I bought a BV5 from Lee today I can't wait to get this baby home, I just hope that I will be happy with this set, when the TV signal turns digital later this year and don't regret that I'm missing the DVI input But I just love the design of the BV5 that I just want one and will give it a shot

Re: [BV5] Does B&O overrule the panasonic settings?
Thanks guys for the positive responses
And for ThePriest, also the congratulations and welcome on board! Now you have to wait for the delivery and it will probably look like ages...
About the upgrade to a newer panel. I'm still thinking about several aspects, like:
- Will I fit a newer full HD panel, what do I have to change! Does it requieres a different VGA board, will it be recognized by the system?
- Will I fit an older panel with the older resolution 852x480? i.e. a D9 version, like Beogen. At least the system will be able to send a videosignal that suits the panel. I've figured out that the mkII, III and IV has the same software which supports till a D8 version (according to the service menu) So the change that a D9 panel works is bigger then a latest D11 version imho.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I stay with the lower SD resolution panel, the system has to scale less. And the quality of the picture of the BV5 is depending on the quality of the program that is broadcasted. And with several SD programs I really enjoy the picture. despite the opinions that everything needs more contrast, pixels etc...
But eventually, I want the ps3 to play at full HD speed... and not through RGB. Even a blu-ray disc looks awfull when it is scaled down to SD format. (I have to admit I use compositevideo/CVBS)
Last month I bought a BC2 and a BV5 so I have to take it easy on my spendings right now.
So, I've ordered a hd-ready kit this afternoon because my BV5 doesn't have a VGA and DVI socket.
The plan is to rent a profi pana panel to look how it's responds to the system. Then I can see if it will function properly.
Just a few thoughts for now and any comments are welcome.
@Beogen, you mentioned that you bought a th-42ps9EK. What resolution does it have? Is it 854x480 panel?
@ ThePriest, you've pm.

Re: [BV5] Does B&O overrule the panasonic settings?
Sorry Beobuddy, I mistyped.
I bought a TH-42PH9EK, which is a HD ready and this one has a 1024x768 resolution.
Before I built this into my own BV5, my dealer wanted to test it in an older BV5 with a generation 6 panel. This was succesfull but of course the resolution was lower since the built-in BS2 was not capable of this higher resolution. So you don't gain on resolution but the color and contrast was better then the original one.
The TH-42PS9EH is indeed a 852 x 480 panel.
