Hello guys,
I was looking at the displays on the components of my Beosystem 6500 and noticed that they could use a little cleaning. My question is -- are they made out of plastic or glass?
According to the beoworld description for the Beosystem 7000, the front displays are glass. I'm assuming this would be the same for the 6500 too, but I see some (plastic-like) light scuffs in mine which leads me to believe that they are in fact plastic. If they are plastic, I'll use Novus plastic polish to clean them.
Thanks,
Aaron

Hi Aaron
They are in plastic on both 5000, 5500, 6500 and 7000, i just use warm vater and a little soap to clean mine.

Re: Beosystem 6500 displays
Okay, Thanks Soren!
It seems somewhat odd that B&O would use plastic on their flagship 6500 components when the displays on the lower-range 4500 system were made out of glass and the MCP 6500 and Beolink 7000 used glass as well. But, you never quite know with B&O!

BenSA: Is the Beosystem 4500 considered lower range?
Compared to the 6500, yes.

The 4500 system displays are made of glass for the simple reason that they are touch sensitive controls as well as displays. I assume that plastic would not work as well.
The 5500/6500/7000 displays are just that .......displays.
Personally I don't think there is much to choose between the quality of the amps in any of these beomasters. None of them are particularly good and none particularly bad. The sad fact is that they are all acceptable devices packaged well.
What I don't get is the fact that so many people can enthuse about the sound quality of quite average sounding systems. The same can be said about most of the more modern stuff. The packaging however, is quite brilliant in most cases.

Re: Beosystem 6500 displays
I agree with Peter and Graham. I still love my beosystem 7000, but not for its sonic merits - my older 6000 and 8000 systems sounds much better and are better built, but they lack the "modern" features of the 7000.
This is not a B&O problem in general, it's the same with Sony (for example) and many other manufacturers. Sony's 70s equipment was of very good quality, but in the 80s they use much more plastic and the equipment was built to a price rather than built to a certain quality range. If you visit a forum such as Audiokarma, you'll find that people love 70s vintage stuff much more than 80s stuff, much due to better build quality - 70s stuff tend to last. The particular B&O problem, as I see it, is that much of B&O's 70s stuff was a bit boring (with some exceptions, of course), other manufacturers simply had better and more powerful products (but not as goodlooking, of course). Featurewise B&O got really interesting in the 80s, but the build quality was better in the 70s. Imho, the 6000 and 8000 systems are the best compromises - great build quality (but not as great as some earlier products) and performance and some interesting features (but not as interesting as the 80s products). I just wish there were more products like that. Sooo, my poorly explained point is: I wish the 4500 & 5000/5500/6500/7000 ranges were built in 1978 rather than 1987, then we would have great features AND great looks AND great performance :-)

70s boring!? Beogram 4000, Beomaster 6000 quad, Beomaster 4400, Beomaster 2400 etc! The most fertile period for B&O in my view. No computers so I agree multi room was out but stunning design and build quality.

Peter: yes, those are stunning products! As I wrote: "with some exceptions". :-) I'm not that keen on many of the other 70s products though.

Agree with Peter. The 70's is when my love affair with the brand first started andI bought a Beomaster 1900 when I could resist no longer. I remember wanting a Beomaster 8000 but it was out of my price range. I only managed to buy the 1900 thanks to the John Lewis policy of accepting 3 postdated cheques.
Even back then it was the packaging that appealed to me and generated that must have feeling which some B&O products still have to this day!

Re: Beosystem 6500 displays
Interesting thread this one.
What about the Active versus Passive which the 6500 system is able to handle.
What would be the ideal speakers to go for if you invest in a 6500/7000 system? Active Penta's??

Mmm. Interesting. CX50s are probably the limit if you stick with the internal amp, aren't they??

Re: Beosystem 6500 displays
I think we should not be too down on the 5500 amplifier - quite capable of driving all the B&O range - I probably wouldn't use Beovox Pentas but apart from those, no problem.

Re: Beosystem 6500 displays
Tim uses RL140s with his 5500 with no problems. He has slightly modified his 5500 as can be seen in the linked article. I am using CX100s at present but they drive any of my speakers with no problem - I have one modified and one not!

Re: Beosystem 6500 displays
Is the mod the same as Die Bogener has shown. As its written in German I don't fully understand it.
I was thinking about Penta mk III. Would that be a good one?
With Penta vox ICE power seems to do the trick.

No, that involves a bunch of other modifications, mainly to the preamp stage.
I did this (i.e the Tim Jarman fix, remove four caps) to my 6500 a while ago. While I think it sounds nicer now, I still haven't made up my mind whether it's actually too bright. Maybe the cap upgrade I did on my Beovox Pentas around the same time just changed the complete setup too much at once for my ears to get accustomed to it...

Re: Beosystem 6500 displays
Hmmm...
Has anyone else tried the "Tim Jarman Fix" on their BM 5500/6500/7000? Is it a worthwhile improvement -- how exactly does the sound quality change?

Can anyone here find the link to Die Bogeners upgrade? I will try the google translator.

FWIW, i had a bm5000 and a bc5000 damaged in shipping. what was damaged? the "glass" display panels... so at least on the 5000 they were glass.

The 1960s one didn't have any glass panels.
