How to read online auction listings

An aspiring new eBayer might benefit from past experiences of other users with a handy, small dictionary of the most common expressions used in listings. Here are some I could think of, hopefully others can add to the list:

    • "untested" = does not work
    • "untested due to lack of cables and/or power cord" = tested, and does not work
    • "externally mint" = does not work
    • "worked when put to storage" = stopped working years ago, has not been used since
    • "evaluated by a serviceman" = mechanical parts missing
    • "expected to be an easy fix" = spare parts not available
    • "rare!" = not more than one on each listing page

    Smile

Brilliant, and true Mika.LaughingLaughingLaughing It does amaze me what some people describe as rare.

For millions of years, mankind lived just like the animals. Then something happened which unleashed the power of our imagination. We learned to talk and we learned to listen..

'Would suit an enthusiast or collector' - broken and expensive.

"buy it now"   I am hoping to sell it for a really high price as soon as possible

"reserve not met" I am hoping to sell it for a really high price at the auction end

"mint" well it was when new

"unique"  this is the only one with this serial number

"rare"   there was not another actaully on ebay when I listed it

My favourite is from a seller flogging a CDX with the usual broken left hand hinge.

"Easily fixed with a spot of glue"  Translation:- "I've tried fixing this but for the life in me I can't so I'll pass it on to some other poor unsuspecting sod".

    Chris.

The use of metaphors should be avoided like the plague. They're like a red rag to a bull to me.

"please contact me at the following link as my eBay mailbox is full / broken" = I don't have anything to sell, but once you contact me I will try and steal as much money from you as I can.

    Adrian.
