Max cable connection length for turntable to Beosound\Beocenter

    Hi all

Subsequent to sorting an old Sony turntable by fitting an RIAA preamp I am now seeking thoughts on the maximum length of feed cable ie turntable to main unit I am thinking of a separation of about 1.50 - 2.00 m will this work or will extraneous noise be collected?

I ask before changing the locational setup and the production of new interconnecting cables.

Salut from a now calm Finistere!

    Hi Tony,

A couple of metres will not be a problem for a non pre-amped turntable.  However, the golden rule is always to add the pre-amp as early as possible in the chain (if using an external pre-amp).  Once amplified, you can safely run a line-level signal up to 50 metres or more with confidence (even up to 100 metres with careful planning!)

    Best regards,

    Steve.

Thanks for that Steve - in fact have mounted the preamp in the turntable box with suitable shielding(a piece of shim brass suitably bent up and earthed!)

Also using the 12volt motor supply for the preamp with of course a smoothing/noise killer in the supply line!

    Hi Tony,

That sounds like a good solution - I always say that the best place for an RIAA pre-amp is inside the turntable casing.

    Best regards,

    Steve.
